The Prince’s Drawing School, Shoreditch has announced a one week Drawing Stories: Comics and Graphic Novels course later this month, taught by Emily Haworth-Booth, the winner of last year’s Jonathan Cape/Observer/Comica Graphic Short Story Prize

This one week course,  is suitable for both beginners and those with more experience. It is an ideal introduction to graphic storytelling, offering guidance on everything from choosing tools to generating ideas, and contemporary examples will be used as a starting point for exploring the huge potential of the form. We will also spend some time drawing from life, combining observation with imagination and memory. For those with projects already underway, this is a an opportunity to reconsider both style and process, receive feedback and experiment with technique. By the final day students will have drawn and inked their own graphic short story. Open to all levels and ages from 16 plus.

Emily Haworth-Booth is a comics artist, writer, performer and teacher who has flukily won a bizarre array of awards including the 2013 Jonathan Cape/Observer/Comica Graphic Short Story Prize, runner-up of the same prize in 2008 and winner of the Young National Poetry Competition in 1998. In 2007 she was also a winner of a Warner Comedy Box Competition and a finalist in the Nivea Funny Women Competition which meant she got to talk about her bum in front of 400 people at the Comedy Store in London.

Her comics have been published in Vogue and the Observer and she is knee-deep into her first graphic novel which is about how she got ME and how she got better, and is struggling with the notion of how to bring a thriller-like edge to a story that is essentially just about someone who is really tired all the time. Llike all annoying people who work in Shoreditch, she makes extravagant claims about being able to play the ukulele, however she compensates for this with a poor-to-middling fashion sense.

Emily is a tutor at The Prince’s Drawing School where she teaches a ten week course called Drawing the Graphic Novel, and a continuing course, Drawing the Graphic Novel 2, in the summer term, along with the odd summer school such as the one detailed above. She is also The Prince’s Drawing School’s Communications Editor.

• Drawing Stories: Comics and Graphic Novels, 21st-25th July, 10am-5.00pm, taught by Emily Haworth-Booth at The Prince’s Drawing School, Shoreditch. More info: www.princesdrawingschool.org/programmes/public/holiday.asp
