Judge Dredd: A Better World: A Better World a Better World

A Better World is a modern Judge Dredd classic, a powerful story focusing on a large-scale experiment with the aim of making Mega-City One a better place for the citizens who live there, but if the experiment is successful them the power of the Judges could well be destroyed.

Writers Rob Williams and Arthur Wyatt, with artist Henry Flint, craft a taut political thriller that challenges readers to reassess what they think of the world of Judge Dredd.

Rob Williams is the writer of Suicide Squad and Martian Manhunter for DC Comics, Unfollow for Vertigo and Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor for Titan Comics. His previous work for 2000AD includes “Judge Dredd: Titan”, “The Grievous Journey Of Ichabod Azrael (And The Dead Left In His Wake)” and “The Ten-Seconders”, and has written Roy of the Rovers for Rebellion.

Arthur Wyatt is a British writer based in the American Pacific Northwest, where he lives with his wife Heather and children Gayle and Verity. He has written extensively for 2000AD and the Judge Dredd Megazine, including stories set in the Judge Dredd universe, the 2012 move Dredd universe, and beyond. He was also the founding editor of the British small press magazine FutureQuake.

Henry Flint, winner of the National Comics Awards for Best Comic Artist 2004, is one of the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic’s rising superstars. Co-creator of “Sancho Panzer”, “Shakara”, and the fan-favourite strip, “Zombo”, his incredibly versatile pencils have also graced “A.B.C. Warriors”, “Judge Dredd/Aliens”, “Deadlock”, “Judge Dredd”, “Rogue Trooper”, “Nemesis the Warlock”, “The V.C.’s’ and “Venus Bluegenes”. He has even written a “Tharg’s Alien Invasions” strip! He has also worked on several American comics, including Omega Men, Haunted Tank and Fear Itself: Fearsome Four. Away from the comics industry, Henry produced art of the cover of DJ Food’s 2012 album, The Search Engine.

Boo Cook’s 2000AD debut came some years before he was to provide pencils for the comic proper – as a young man, he sent a fan sketch in to the letters page! Thankfully he continued to hone his art, working on a number of “Future Shocks” before landing a guest spot on the fan-favourite “A.B.C. Warriors” series. Cook’s facility with huge crowd scenes and alien designs has quickly established him as a talent to watch, and with three co-created series — “Asylum”, “Dead Men Walking”, “Harry Kipling (Deceased)” — under his belt, he is one of the Galaxy’s Greatest’s brightest hopes for the future.

Jake Lynch is a Norfolk based Illustrator, best known for his work on “Judge Dredd” and “Proteus Vex” for 2000AD and the Judge Dredd Megazine. He has also worked on other Rebellion publications such as Action and The Vigilant, as well as Film/TV, and poster design for others. A self-taught artist, he is living proof that they’ll let any idiot in here and, as a self-confessed Sci-Fi nerd, he is often the first to be asked to leave.

The early 1980s saw 2000AD hit its golden era. With Judge DreddStrontium DogRogue TrooperSláine and more firing on all cylinders it became the UK’s most exciting and innovative comic. Its covers played no small part in its appeal, and those covers were the brainchild of Robin Smith whose job was to lay out a cover design to pass to an artist who would transform it into the finished product.

This collection of some of Smith’s cover layouts shows just how integral his ideas were to some of 2000AD’s most famous and revered covers, and it’s a fascinating glimpse into the creative process.

Featuring covers by some of the galaxy’s greatest artists, including Brian Bolland (The Killing Joke), Dave Gibbons (Watchmen), Carlos Ezquerra (Judge Dredd), Kevin O’Neill (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), Mick McMahon (Judge Dredd), Ian Gibson (The Ballad of Halo Jones), Alan Davis (Captain Britain), Steve Dillon (Preacher), Cam Kennedy (Rogue Trooper), Massimo Belardinelli (Ace Trucking Co.), Eric Bradbury (Mytek The Mighty), Brett Ewins (Johnny Nemo), Glenn Fabry (Sláine), Ian Kennedy (Dan Dare), José Ortiz (The Thirteenth Floor), Cliff Robinson (Judge Dredd), Kim Raymond (Roy of the Rovers), Ron Smith (Judge Dredd), Brendan McCarthy (Rogan Gosh) and Bryan Talbot (Nemesis the Warlock).

“I AM THE LAW!”

In the Third Millenium, the world changed. Climate. Nations. All were in upheaval. Humanity itself turned as violent as the planet. Civilisation threatened to collapse. And then… a solution was found. The crumbling legal system was merged with the overburdened police, creating a powerful and efficient hybrid. These new guardians of society had the power to dispense both justice and punishment. They were police, jury, and executioner all in one. They were the Judges!

When Mega-City One erupts in violent block wars, there’s only one man Justice Department can rely on to suffocate the flames of rebellion. His name is Judge Dredd.

But when the city’s brightest beacon of justice is convicted of breaking the very law he’s been entrusted to uphold, he’s sentenced to spend the rest of his life rotting in the Aspen Penal Colony.

In order to clear his name, Dredd must escape captivity, make his way across the toxic Cursed Earth, break back into the city, and find the familiar foe that framed him. All in a day’s work for Judge Dredd.

Featuring art by legendary Judge Dredd co-creator Carlos Ezquerra (Preacher) and a script by Andrew Helfer (The Shadow), this is the official adaptation of Judge Dredd, the 1995 movie written by William Wisher, Jr. (Terminator 2: Judgement Day) and Steven E. de Souza (Die Hard).

Definitive Nemesis the Warlock is the ultimate way to read one of the most important sci-fi sagas published in the pages of 2000 AD.

Pat Mills is the creator and first editor of 2000 AD. He developed Judge Dredd and is the writer-creator of many of 2000 AD’s most popular stories such as Sláine, Nemesis and A.B.C. Warriors. Amongst his credits are Marshal Law (Marvel and DC Comics), co-created with Kevin O’Neill, the French graphic novel series Requiem, Vampire Knight with artist Olivier Ledroit, and Be Pure! Be Vigilant! Behave! The Secret History of 2000 AD and Judge Dredd. His current projects include Joe Pineapples: Tin Man, illustrated by Simon Bisley and Clint Langley, Spacewarp, and Kiss My Axe! The Secret History of Sláine the Warped Warrior.

Bryan Talbot is one of the UK’s most respected comics artists. He has contributed to Future Shocks, Judge Dredd, Nemesis the Warlock, Ro-Busters and Sláine in the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, and most recently wrote and illustrated a silent One-Off. Beyond 2000 AD, Talbot is renowned for his body of graphic novel work, which includes The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, Heart of Empire, The Tale of One Bad Rat and Alice in Sunderland.

Kevin O’Neill was a 2000AD legend. From working as an art assistant on the very first prog, he quickly became involved in the creative side of the comic, co-creating classics like A.B.C. Warriors, Bonjo From Beyond The Stars, Metalzoic and Nemesis the Warlock. Outside the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, O’Neill was briefly notorious as the only artist ever to have his work rejected wholesale by the Comics Code Authority! Happily, his notoriety quickly became fame and acclaim, as his work on strips like Marshal Law and most recently The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen raised him to a very high profile.

Strontium Dog: Search and Destroy 4

WELCOME TO THE DOGHOUSE

Warped by radioactive Strontium-90 fallout after the Great Nuclear War, mutants like Johnny Alpha only have one career option available: a hard life as galactic bounty hunters known by the ‘norms’ as ‘Strontium Dogs’. The Stontium Dogs patrol the galaxy, bringing trouble to the troublemakers.

It’s a hard and dangerous life where only the toughest can survive. Johnny Alpha – the leader of the mutant rebellion – might just be the toughest of them all.

This collection sees Johnny and his brother-for-life Wulf Sternhammer return to the Gronk homeworld seeking justice against a band of violent trappers – unaware that they’re walking into a trap…

Alongside “The Kid Knee Caper” and “The Killing”, this volume also contains “The Moses Incident”, in which a routine bounty takes a dark and sinister turn which changes Johnny’s world forever and sends him into the darkest parts of the galaxy. Will he be able to escape The Island of the Living Dead?

With over 300 2000AD stories to his name – not to mention over 250 Daily Star “Judge Dredd” strips – the late Alan Grant’s prolific creative record speaks for itself. Outside the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, Grant is well-known to Batman fans following a lengthy run on various incarnations of the title. He also adapted Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novels Kidnapped and Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde in Graphic Novel format with artist Cam Kennedy.

John Wagner has been scripting for 2000AD for more years than he cares to remember. His creations include Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, Ace Trucking, Al’s Baby, Button Man and Mean Machine. Outside of 2000AD, his credits include Star Wars, Lobo, The Punisher and the critically acclaimed A History of Violence.

Carlos Ezquerra was the co-creator of Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, Rat Pack, Major Eazy and many other fan favourite characters, he designed the classic original Dredd costume as well as visually conceptualising Mega-City One. In addition to these credits he also illustrated “A.B.C. Warriors”, “Judge Anderson”, “Tharg the Mighty”, and “Cursed Earth Koburn”, amongst many other stories. Outside of the ‘Galaxy’s Greatest Comic’, Ezquerra illustrated the first “Third World War” episodes in Crisis magazine, and become a regular collaborator with Garth Ennis, working on Adventures in the Rifle Brigade, Bloody Mary, Just a Pilgrim, Condors, The Magnificent Kevin and two special Preacher episodes. He died in 2018 but his profound influence on the world of comic art cannot be overstated.

Aside from his own co-created Bad City Blue, Robin Smith has illustrated “Future Shocks”, “Judge Dredd”, “Mean Machine”, “Rogue Trooper”, “Strontium Dog”, “Tharg the Mighty” and “Time Twisters”. He is also the illustrator of Paradox Press’s Green Candles, and is co-creator of The Bogie Man with John Wagner and Alan Grant.

“The Haunting of Jilly Johnson”, art by Rafael Busóm Clúa (Treasury of British Comics, 2025)

From the very first night in her new flat, Jilly Johnson is haunted by nightmares and calls out the name of a man who Jilly does not know. Spooked by a fortune teller, and by what she sees as the flat itself sending her messages, she becomes determined to find out more about the previous tenants, and the accident that led to the death of one of them. And then in The Island of Stones, two English tourists on holiday on a Greek island meet a modern master sculptor, known for his stone statues of the human form, and discover the secret of his success – the head of Medusa. This story acts as a showcase for Rafael Busom Clua, who initially caught the reader’s eye with his incredibly stylish work on Sugar Jones.

Rafael Busóm Clúa (who usually signed his work as Busom Cluá, also known as Rafael Busom) made his debut in comics in Spain in the 1960s, with strips for Azucena, published by Toray and for the anthology title, Sissi, published by Bruguera.

During the 1970s and 1980s his work featured in a variety of British comics, many commissioned through Selecciones Ilustradas, including Picture Romance, Jinty, Pink and Oh, Boy!. His best known work, some strips collected as The Best of Sugar Jones by Rebellion in 2020, is Sugar Jones for Pink, written by Pat Mills. Some of the strips Clua drew were reprinted in Spain in the collections Babette, Salomé and Torbellino, but not “Sugar Jones”. Tebeosfera notes they also featured in some French magazines, including Corail, German (Vanessa) and Holland (Anita Super Boek).

After the death of Malcolm Kinniburgh, who had previously kept the Thistlebone legend alive, the local Harrowvale constabulary find clues that lead them to investigate the abandoned film production of a 1970s folk horror film, The Dule Tree. Based on a harrowing account from the seventeen hundreds where thirteen innocent women and one man were hanged during the witch trials, the film itself ran into production problems, the source of which has remained a mystery for fifty years.

Tom Eglington began writing for 2000AD in 2010, his first work being on a Steve Yeowell illustrated “Future Shock”, “Universal Masterchef”. Since then, he has gone on to create scripts for numerous “Future Shocks”, “3rillers”, “Time Twisters” and “Mega-City One Tales”. He has created original series “Outlier”, “Blunt” and “Thistlebone”. His run of scripts on “Judge Dredd” have seen him work with Boo Cook, Brendan McCarthy, Colin MacNeil, and Staz Johnson. His work beyond the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic includes two children’s novels, and he is known as an artist, with work appearing in galleries as far afield as New York, LA and Australia.

Simon Davis divides his time between comic work and portrait painting and is a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters (RP). Davis began working in comics in the early 1990s but has also worked as a storyboard artist and magazine illustrator. Among the many characters that he has drawn for 2000AD, he is probably best known for his work on Sinister Dexter with Dan Abnett, Stone Island and Ampney Crucis with Ian Edginton, and Slaine: The Brutania Chronicles with Pat Mills.

Major Taggart leads the squad of four soldiers, court martialled for various offences and dubbed the Rat Pack. These soldiers are sent on do-or-die missions for the Allies during World War II, and despite them resent Taggart and not trusting each other, they must still complete their missions against the Nazi forces.

With stories ranging from finding stolen diplomatic papers, destroying German-held dams in Norway, and hijacking Hitler’s personal train in order to steal Nazi war plans, this collection brings together the ultimate, and greatest, Rat Pack stories in one volume, with stunning art by Cam Kennedy and Eric Bradbury.

Alan Hebden scripted a number of comics in the late 1970s and early 1980s, including strips for Battle such as “The Rat Pack” with artists Carlos Ezquerra, Massimo Belardinelli and Eric Bradbury, “Major Eazy” with Carlos Ezquerra, “War Dog” and “Fighting Mann” with Cam Kennedy and both “Death Squad” and “Crazy Keller” with Eric Bradbury. For Starlord he wrote “Mind Wars”, which featured the art of Jesus Redondo, and scripted the majority of “Planet of the Damned” (its opening having been scripted by Pat Mills). His prolific work for 2000AD included “Meltdown Man” and the sequel to “Harlem Heroes” with Massimo Bellardinelli. He also scripted “Death Planet”, which featured the first female lead in a 2000AD strip. Alan is currently working on a violent, sexy novel that follows a blood-soaked trail of retribution, from the India of the Raj on the eve of World War One to England and Italy at the start of the Swinging Sixties.

Cam Kennedy‘s many comic credits include many strips for 2000AD. A key early “Rogue Trooper” artist, he has also drawn Batman/Judge Dredd: Vendetta in Gotham, “Judge Dredd”, “Tharg the Mighty”, “Tharg’s Future Shocks”, and “The V.C.’s”. His extracurricular work includes “Axel Pressbutton”, Batman, Lobo, Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Star Wars.

Eric Bradbury began his comic career at Knockout, working on such humour strips as “Blossom” and “Our Ernie”. He moved onto the adventure western, “Lucky Logan”, sharing art chores with Mike Western (Bradbury would go on to ink Western’s pencils on “The Leopard from Lime Street”). High profile work on “Mytek the Mighty” (Valiant), “The House of Dolmann” (Valiant), “Von Hoffman’s Invasion” (Jet!), “Death Squad” (Battle), “Hook Jaw” (Action) and “Doomlord” (Eagle) followed. Bradbury has been described as an ‘unsung hero’ of 2000AD, having contributed to many popular strips in the long-running sci-fi comic. His credits in the ‘Galaxy’s Greatest comic’ include “Rogue Trooper”, “Tharg the Mighty”, “Invasion” and “The Mean Arena”.

He co-created fan-favourite characters Devlin Waugh and Armitage, as well as drawing for classic strips Judge Dredd and Sinister/Dexter.

The penultimate volume in the Definitive Nemesis the Warlock series sees the cosmic conflict between Nemesis and Torquemada continue to unfold across the history of time and space. Chasing after the dangerous Thoth, Nemesis, Purity and Torquemada race backwards through time to try and claim him first. But time-travel has consequences for the whole of reality, and Thoth’s presence causes ruptures which threaten existence itself!

Written by Pat Mills, this mind-bending volume of Definitive Nemesis features art by John Hicklenton, Carl Critchlow and Kevin O’Neill.

Pat Mills is the creator and first editor of 2000AD. He developed Judge Dredd and is the writer-creator of many of 2000AD’s most popular stories such as “Sláine”, “Nemesis” and “A.B.C. Warriors”. His current projects include “Ragtime Soldier”.

The late Kevin O’Neill was a 2000AD legend. From working as an art assistant on the very first prog, he quickly became involved in the creative side of the comic, co-creating classics like “A.B.C. Warriors”, “Bonjo From Beyond The Stars”, “Metalzoic” and “Nemesis the Warlock”. Outside the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, O’Neill was briefly notorious as the only artist ever to have his work rejected wholesale by the Comics Code Authority! Happily, his notoriety quickly became fame and acclaim, as his work on strips like Marshal Law and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Carl Critchlow, well known for his work outside 2000AD as the creator of Thrud The Barbarian, is the co-creator of semi-comic sci-fi strip “Lobster Random” for 2000AD, with writer Simon Spurrier, and drew “Nemesis the Warlock” and “Deadlock”, then moving on to Batman/Judge Dredd, “Flesh”, “Flesh 3000 AD”, “Future Shocks”, “Judge Dredd”, “Mean Machine” and “Tales of Telguuth”.

The adventures of Sláine Mac Roth continue in the second volume of the Definitive series, collecting the complete story in order. With character-defining arcs such as The Time Killer and The Tomb of Terror, this volume sees the exiled barbarian facing new trials and tribulations – including a trip through time which will have dangerous repercussions for everyone on Earth!

Showcasing Pat Mills’s epic storytelling alongside the art of Glenn Fabry, Bryan Talbot and David Pugh, this is another unmissable entry for fans and new readers alike.

Glenn Fabry is a classic 2000AD artist, best known for his innovative and highly detailed work on Slaine, though he has also illustrated “Judge Dredd” and a “Future Shock”, not to mention part of the Batman/Judge Dredd crossover story “Die Laughing”. Fabry’s best-known work outside the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic is almost certainly the full run of covers he painted for Preacher. However, his career is split between covers and sequential work, and he has also contributed to A1, The Authority, Global Frequency, Hellblazer, The Scarab, Swamp Thing and Transmetropolitan.

Bryan Talbot is one of the UK’s most respected comics artists. He has contributed to “Future Shocks”, “Judge Dredd”, “Nemesis the Warlock”, “Ro-Busters” and “Sláine” in the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, and wrote and illustrated a silent “One-Off”. Beyond 2000AD, Talbot is renowned for his body of graphic novel work, which includes The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, Heart of Empire, The Tale of One Bad Rat and Alice in Sunderland.

David Pugh moved from advertising to comics in 1977 when he started to draw “Slaine” for 2000AD. In 1989 he joined Eagle, to work on “Dan Dare”. In 2002, he produced the graphic novel, Obvious Tactics for Black Library Publishing.
