The Ballad of Halo Jones: Full Colour Omnibus Edition
By Alan Moore and Ian Gibson, coloured by Barbara Nosenzo
Out: 19th January 2023 | Announced by Rebellion in February 2022
Hardcover | 240 Pages
ISBN: 978-1786187703

The Ballad of Halo Jones: Full Colour Omnibus Edition

Where did she go? Out. What did she do? Everything…

Alan Moore and Ian Gibson’s ground-breaking feminist space opera and science fiction classic, The Ballad of Halo Jones, is to be published in a full colour hardcover omnibus for the first time. The artwork is to be restored and lovingly coloured by Barbara Nosenzo, and the collection will feature extra content.

This radical and revolutionary series remains one of Moore’s most beloved and lauded stories and this new omnibus edition brings together Nosenzo’s colour work on the three books of Halo Jones, previously only available as separate volumes.

Barbara Nosenzo’s sensitive and enthralling colour work on Gibson’s art was a revelation when published as three separate volumes on 2018, and the omnibus is an opportunity for fans old and new to experience the worlds of Halo Jones afresh. The project was the first major English language work by the Italian colourist, who was talent-spotted by Rebellion at the Angouleme comics festival in France, and has since gone on to work on the science fiction series Deep Beyond from Image Comics.

A cultural icon and a high water mark for both science fiction and British comics, this timeless tale from the writer of Watchmen and V for Vendetta follows one woman’s journey through dead-end jobs, deadly wars, and personal tragedy, as she changes from an innocent teenager into a world-weary woman.

Described by award-winning author Lauren Beukes as her “first love” and “first role model”, Halo is an ordinary woman in extraordinary circumstances. Trapped in a crowded housing project floating off the coast of Manhattan, a dystopian world where jobs are scarce and excitement non-existent, a bored Halo dreams of escaping out into the galaxy any way she can to rewrite her destiny.

But in a city where dangerous riots happen at the slightest provocation and even going to the shops is an ordeal requiring careful planning and a handful of zen-inducing-grenades, the price of freedom might prove to be more than she bargained for. And even when she does get out, there are challenges awaiting her in the cosmos that she could never possibly imagine or be prepared for.

First published in weekly instalments between 1984 and 1986, Halo Jones is Moore at his most inventive and empathic best, following Halo as she explores the galaxy while also, through both victory and tragedy, finding herself. It was Moore’s last work for 2000AD before he went on to make comics history with fellow 2000AD alumni, Dave Gibbons on Watchmen and Brian Bolland on Batman: The Killing Joke, at DC Comics.

by Tom Tully and David Sque
Out: 8th June 2023

ISBN: 978-1786189509

Roy of the Rovers: The Best of the 1980s Volume 2: Dream Team

Melchester Rovers’ reign of the 1980s continues! As the team surges forward towards a Milk Cup final, they are undoubtedly the best in the country. But this hasn’t stopped some discontent behind the scenes. With cricket legend Geoff Boycott acting as chairman for the club and Roy bringing veteran keeper Bob Wilson and Liverpool legend Emlyn Hughes back into the game, many fans and critics are questioning Roy’s managerial decision-making. And now Roy is about to sign Steve Norman and Martin Kemp from the hit-making pop group, Spandau Ballet – they may be worth their weight in gold as musicians, but can they perform on the pitch?

Tom Tully is one the most prolific writers ever to grace British comics. His diverse portfolio of work was produced over four decades. Born in Glasgow, Tully entered the industry in the sixties when he began working for Fleetway. One of his earliest strips, Heros the Spartan, ran in the original Eagle and was illustrated by the great Frank Bellamy. He also wrote Mytek the Mighty (Valiant & Vulcan) and The Steel Claw (Valiant & Vulcan) in the same decade. The seventies saw Tully work on a variety of significant stories including Adam Eterno (Thunder), Johnny Red (Battle), Harlem He-roes (2000 AD), The Leopard from Lime Street (Buster) and Roy of the Rovers (Tiger), the strip he worked on longer than any other writer.

David Sque studied at Bournemouth Art College and got his National Diploma in Art and Design. He started working for IPC in the 60s – one of his earliest strips being The Skids Kids – a sports strip in the kids’ humour title, Buster. He defined the ‘modern day’ look of Roy Race in the Roy of the Rovers comic during the 70s, and continued to draw it until August 1986. While concentrating on his fine art, David still kept a hand in football comic art, illustrating some Scorer strips in the Daily Mirror newspaper. In 2020 he returned to familiar territory, becoming the new artist on the rebooted Roy of the Rovers.

By Kevin O’Neill
Out: 28th June 2023 | Regular Edition (released in shops 2nd August) | Limited Edition

2000AD Art of Kevin O’Neill: Apex Edition

Even after what was in their stunning Brian Bolland and Mick McMahon Apex Editions, Kev’s is going to be something special – and the slipcase edition includes a tip-in with brand new art that he drew earlier this year.

This is going to be spectacular book, an incredible insight into the art of one of comics’ most unique talents, and, Rebellion believe, will properly showcase Kev’s immense talent.

O’Neill, who sadly died in November 2022, was an artist without peer. His work on strips in 2000AD such as “Nemesis the Warlock“, “Metalzoic“, “Judge Dredd“, “Ro-Busters“ and more sealed his reputation even before his wildly popular and influential work on Marshal Law with Pat Mills and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen with Alan Moore.

Classic Gums: The Monster Fun Years
By Roy Davis, Robert Nixon, Alf Saporito
Out: 9th November 2023
Paperback | 128 Pages | ISBN: 978-1786189998

Classic Gums: The Monster Fun Years

The first Gums collection is here, including the complete run of strips published in Monster Fun through 1976.

The hapless, loveable shark with false teeth was a highlight of the short-lived Monster Fun comic and proved to be so popular with the fans that he appeared as the front cover strip for most of the run.

The Great White (toothless) shark stalks a territory around the Australian coast, where he constantly butts heads with local surfer, Bluey. While Gums is out to snack on the youngster, Bluey is determined to take the shark’s false teeth as a memento!

Frank Roy Davis was born in Fulham, London in 1921. He studied at West Kensington Central School, originally intending to enter a clerical career. His talent for art led him a different direction and his first job was as a studio artist for the wallpaper designers Arthur Sanderson & Sons.

After serving with the RAF between 1940-1946, he went on to join the Gaumont British Animation studio. After its closure in 1950, Davis began a career as a freelance cartoonist. His work was published in Tatler, the Daily Mirror and Punch, amongst others. In 1964 he joined the staff at IPC, writing scripts for several of their comic titles, including Lion (“The Backwoods Boys”), Whizzer and Chips (“Sid’s Snake”, “Odd Ball”), Jet (“Faceache”) and Monster Fun (“Gums”). Although he left IPC in 1974, he continued to work as a freelancer for them until 1992 when he retired.

As well as being a member of the British Cartoonists’ Association, he also was a founder of the Cartoonists’ Club of Great Britain. He passed away on 11th November 2004.

Robert Nixon was born in North Yorkshire on 7th July 1939, the fifth of six children. His artistic skills were recognised by his teachers at a very early age. Nixon won several art competitions and a scholarship to Middlesbrough Art College in 1955. Unfortunately his time at college came to a premature end after his father died, but after a short character as a local lithographic artist, Nixon left to pursue a career as a cartoonist with DC Thomson. He took over “Little Plum” in The Beano after Leo Baxendale left the publisher in the early 1960s. He would also take over the art chores on “Roger the Dodger” from Ken Reid and “Lord Snoot”y from Dudley D. Watkins.

In the 1970s, Nixon started to work for IPC, illustrating the stand out strips, “Gums” and “Kid Kong” in Monster Fun. He also took over from Ken Reid once again on “Frankie Stein”.

Nixon would return to DC Thomson in the mid-80s where he took up drawing “Roger the Dodger” again amongst other strips, including “Beryl the Peril” in The Topper. He passed away on 22nd October 2002.

Alf Saporito worked for Fleetway/IPC from 1967 until the early 80s. His big break came when illustrating “Gus Gorilla” – the strip which appeared on the cover of Cor!! Other strips included one featuring the comedian Charlie Williams in Shiver & Shake and “Master Spy” in Valiant.

Alf is probably best known for his work on “Gums”, taking over after original artist Robert Nixon moved on. Alf remained on the strip when it moved into Buster.

Comic Book Punks: How a Generation of Brits Reinvented Pop Culture

Comic Book Punks: How a Generation of Brits Reinvented Pop Culture (Rebellion, 2023) by Karl Stock

The influence of the comic book has never been greater, from films to streaming and beyond, but the journey comics took from little-regarded kids’ magazines to literary prize-winning books and global franchises turned on a highly unusual group of writers and artists, including 2000ADcontributors such as Alan MooreBrian Bolland and many others.

Few would have expected a small gathering of British comic book fans and creators in the early 1970s to be a global cultural pivot-point, but this was the start of a disparate movement of punks, dropouts and disaffected youths who reinvented a medium and became the imaginative heart of a global success story.

Based on years of interviews with a generation of leading writers, artists and editors, Karl Stockreveals the true story of the wild times, passion and determination that helped, hindered and saw the reinvention of comics. Over three hundred-plus pages, he tells the story of the triumphs and disasters that rewrote the rulebook on what comics could be and who they should be for.

Karl Stock has written “Tharg’s Future Shocks” for 2000AD, Judge Dredd prose fiction for the Judge Dredd Megazine, some collected as part of Judge Fear’s Big Day Out and Other Stories, and strips including “Sniper Elite” and “Death Wish” for Rebellion titles such as BattleThe Vigilant and Cor! & Buster; as well as interviews and features about comics for the Judge Dredd MegazineTripwireComic Heroes and more.

He was also co-author of the 40th anniversary edition of Thrill-Power Overload, with David Bishop, 2000AD‘s official history, which is now insanely expensive as a print edition, but also available as a reasonably-priced digital release.

When Sun was absorbed into Lion he moved on to illustrating Olac the Gladiator, Karl the Viking and Maroc the Mighty. In 1965 he teamed with Mike Butterworth to create The Rise and Fall of the Trigan Empire for Ranger magazine, and continued to paint the comic through its transition into Look and Learn through to 1976. Sexton Blake: Caribbean Crisis & Voodoo Island

A deep sea mission… An impossible murder… A mystery that will challenge even the famous Baker Street sleuth, Sexton Blake…

Beneath a sky of limpid sapphire blue, the research ship Gorgon rolled gently on the scintillating waters of the Caribbean Sea.

Below, in a deep sea bathysphere a thousand feet below sea level, an impossible murder takes place. And only Sexton Blake can solve the case!

Sexton Blake Library No. 501 - Caribbean Crisis - Cover

Caribbean Crisis, first published in the now Rebellion-owned Sexton Blake Library No. 501 in June 1962, was Michael Moorcock’s first published novel, his only “Sexton Blake” story and Mark Hodder notes the original is much sought after by Moorcock completists, even though the author has pointed out on many occasions that the artist James Cawthorn more or less co-wrote it and the editor of the Library, William Howard Baker made a lot of unwelcome revisions.

“Despite all these other hands at work, you can still recognise Moorcock’s influence in the tight plotting and original take on detective fiction clichés,” Mark notes

The story was originally published under the name by “Desmond Reid” a name Baker, frequently applied to work to which he had made changes. In this case, Mark notes, he reversed the politics of the story, to make it less sympathetic to Cuban revolutionaries.

“Mike was dismayed at the time, soon glad to be hidden behind the pseudonym, and over the subsequent sixty years has not permitted the novel to be republished. Nor has he been inclined to revise it … until now. A couple of years ago, I suggested to him that we collaborate on a ‘restored, revised, and extended’ edition. To this, he thankfully agreed. We have made alterations to practically every paragraph. New elements and characters have been added to the story. I was able to expand on descriptions based on my travels in Cuba. The political slant is restored, but updated to better reflect MM of 2023 than of the late ’50s (when the original was written). The old Caribbean Crisis was 29k words in length. The new version is 10k words longer.

“We so enjoyed the process, that we also collaborated on a prequel to the yarn,” he adds. “Voodoo Island is a brand new Sexton Blake tale set in the Caribbean of 1933. It features the villain from Crisis, and re-introduces the wonderful old characters Marie Galante and Professor Huxton Rymer (in what is, in Blake chronology, his penultimate story). The story is 42k words in length.”

Created at the tail end of the Victorian era, Sexton Blake rapidly became one of the most popular fictional characters of the 20th Century. He featured in thousands of adventure stories published in countless papers, magazines and comics. He also appeared in stage plays, radio dramas, films and television serials.

Michael Moorcock is one of the most famous and influential science fiction and fantasy writers of the 20th century. He was also the influential editor of the New Worlds anthology which ushered in the “New Wave’ science fiction writers of the 1960s. He has created such popular characters as Elric of Melnibone, Jerry Cornelius, and has popularised the concept of the ‘Multiverse’ with his Eternal Champion series. He has won the Nebula award, the Guardian Fiction award, and the World Fantasy Award, and several lifetime achievement awards.

Mark Hodder is the author of the Philip K. Dick Award-winning novel The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack and its seven sequels, and of the first officially sanctioned Sexton Blake novel to have been published in nearly half a century (he created and maintains BLAKIANA: The Sexton Blake Resource). He also writes short stories, flash fiction and vignettes. Find out more on his Patreon page. Mark has also worked as a commercial radio scriptwriter, a freelance copywriter, and as a web content producer for the BBC.

In articles by author Mark Hodder on his Blakiana site, you’ll discover what made him such a quintessential part of the English landscape for so long; how he changed with the times; his cultural significance; and why he faded from view in the mid-seventies.
