US TV subscription service HBO has set a debut date for Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen. The series, based on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ comic story and starring Regina King, bows Sunday, 20th October at 9.00pm.

Set in an alternate history where masked vigilantes are treated as outlaws, Watchmen, from executive producer Damon Lindelof (Emmy winner for Lost; HBO’s The Leftovers) embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name, while attempting to break new ground of its own. Nicole Kassell directs the pilot from a script written by Lindelof.

Watchmen is produced for HBO by White Rabbit in association with Warner Bros. Television; executive producer/writer, Damon Lindelof; executive producer/director, Nicole Kassell; executive producer, Tom Spezialy; executive producer/director, Stephen Williams; executive producer, Joseph Iberti.

The series is based on the hugely influential 12-issue maxi series comic co-created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons first published by DC in 1986 and 1987, and collected in a single volume edition in 1987. It has bot been out of print since, also spinning off into a feature film and new comic series set in the same universe, even a Motion Comic, none endorsed by Alan Moore.
