Author Douglas Adams, who wrote The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, has died suddenly aged 49. Mr Adams died on Friday morning in Santa Barbara, California, following a heart attack, said his spokeswoman Sophie Astin.
The author became a household name with the Hitch-Hiker‘s radio 4 series, which spurred a cult science fiction novel and was turned into a BBC TV series.
Published in 1979, the novel was a satirical adventure about a group of intergalactic travellers. It was followed by the sequels The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life, the Universe and Everything and So Long and Thanks For All the Fish.
In recent years the author had been working on a Hitchhiker’s Guide movie, which it was hoped might see release in 2002.
Adams was married with a daughter.
He will be much missed.

The founder of downthetubes, John works as a comics editor, writer, as Creative Consultant on the Dan Dare audio adventures for B7 Media, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. Working in British comics publishing for over 30 years, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Star Trek Magazine and Babylon 5 Magazine. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War and “Dan Dare”. He’s the writer of “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz, published on Tapastic; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood for digital comic 100% Biodegradable.
