Nova Awards for best SF fanzines launched

Placeholder - Call for PapersThe 2013 Nova Awards for excellence in SF fanzines are now open – and include a category for best fan artist. Anyone resident in the UK or Eire can vote, provided they’ve read at least six eligible titles. Many are listed here, and you can vote online. If you’re a fanzine editor, campaigning for votes is encouraged.

Novacon – the UK’s longest-established regional science fiction convention – instituted the annual Nova Awards back in 1973 to celebrate achievement in British science fiction fanzines. Originally decided by a panel of judges, voting was subsequently extended to all Novacon members who could demonstrate a basic knowledge of current fanzines.

Following Novacon 32, the three categories – best fanzine, best fanzine writer, best fanzine artist – were extended to cover fanzines produced in Eire. In addition, electronic fanzines are now eligible.

Beginning with the 2011 Nova Awards, voting was extended to all UK / Irish residents who have read at least six qualifying fanzines published during the eligibility period.

Novacon is held every autumn since 1971 and is back Novacon 43, which will take place on 8th – 10th November 2013 at the Park Inn Hotel, Nottingham with award-winning SF and fantasy author Jo Walton as Guest of Honour.

The event built around a single-stream programme mixing both literary items and more informal events, with deliberate emphasis on social contact between sf fans and genre professionals.

The convention follows a long tradition of SF conventions held in the UK since the late 1930s. Back in those days it was a proud and lonely thing to be an SF fan and the main source of their interest was the written word.

So at Novacon you probably won’t find people dressed up as a Dalek or Darth Vader but you will find SF authors, many of whom have come up through the ranks of SF fandom, a dealers room and a bar filled with like minded people happy to chat for hours about anything under the sun even Science Fiction. Plus, serious science talks from professionals who know what they are talking about and an Art Show featuring original work by both professional and amateur artists. Many of the works shown are available to buy.
