Creating Comics: Eddie Campbell on Colouring From Hell: Master Edition

From Hell: Master Edition Cover

The full colour From Hell: Master Edition hardcover is available now from Knockabout Comics in the UK and Top Shelf Productions in the US.

To mark the release of From Hell: Master Edition, Eddie Campbell sat down with his webcam to walk through the process of revisiting the magnum opus that he and Alan Moore spent more than a decade creating.

Far beyond merely “colouring in between the lines,” this captivating 24-minute video includes thoughtful discussion of his goals, strategies, challenges, and creative solutions, along with many before-and-after demonstrations.

Welcome to Whitechapel… as you’ve never seen it before. With the newly available From Hell: Master Edition hardcover graphic novel, readers can experience the award-winning bestseller From Hell in an astonishing new light, carefully renovated and newly coloured by Eddie Campbell himself.

What is this landmark graphic novel about? Five unsolved murders. Two of the greatest creators in the history of comics: Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell. One sprawling conspiracy, one metropolis on the brink of the twentieth century, and one bloody-minded Ripper ushering London into the modern age of terror. Readers will meet history’s most notorious serial killer, as well as the vast and vibrant communities of Victorian London, in a masterpiece often ranked among the greatest graphic novels of all time.

“This year marks 20 years of the complete From Hell, since it came out in one volume, and my publishers were talking to me about what we could do to make the anniversary special. And I suggested, ‘Why don’t I colour it?’ That turned out to be a two-year job,” says Campbell. “But the real thing that I wanted to do was fix some of the problems – you know, in a 600-page book, there’s bound to be passages where your attention is flagged.”

Alan Moore is widely regarded as the best and most influential writer in the history of comics. His seminal works include Miracleman and Watchmen, for which he won the coveted Hugo Award. Never one to limit himself in form or content, Moore has also published two novels, Voice of the Fire and Jerusalem, an epic poem, The Mirror of Love, and four of his ground-breaking graphic novels, From HellWatchmenV for Vendetta, and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, have been adapted to the silver screen. Moore currently resides in Northampton, England.

Eddie Campbell is best known for his collaboration with Alan Moore on the epic graphic novel From Hell. He’s also known for creating the irreverent and wine-soaked series Bacchus, which revives the Greek gods in a sprawling, unpredictable, and enormously entertaining thousand-page epic; and the award-winning autobiographical series Alec, which has earned him the reputation as one of the great raconteurs in the medium of comics. His other collaborations include The Birth Caul and Snakes & Ladders (also with Alan Moore), two moving and personal poems adapted into the comics form, and The Playwright (with Daren White), a dark comedy about the sex life of a celibate middle-aged man.

  1. I’m sure Eddie Campbell has returned to the UK; he’s no longer in Australia.
