A graphic novel adaptation of Charlie Higson‘s Young James Bond novel Silverfin, part of the small-format Penguin Readers series, was released recently, designed for those learning English as a foreign language.
The project was packaged for Penguin by the creative services company, Dynamo – and eagle-eyed agents will quickly spot the interior art is the work of Doctor Who and Rivers of London artist Lee Sullivan.
Combining carefully adapted text, new illustrations, language practice activities and additional online resources, the Penguin Readers series introduces language learners to bestselling authors and compelling content. Titles include popular classics, exciting contemporary fiction, and thought-provoking non-fiction.
Silverfin is a Level 1 Reader, is A1 in the CEFR framework. Short sentences contain a maximum of two clauses, introducing the past simple tense and some simple modals, adverbs and gerunds.
Many of the Penguin Readers titles at this level are graphic novels, with more in the works.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
