A group of young creatives from the Kendal area have launched the first edition of their online zine, featuring words, music and art. The first issue explores ‘Connection’ and contains articles, visual art, music, interviews and more.

Folded Zine is a space to share, connect and uplift – created by and for young people in Kendal and the South Lakes. The first edition, produced throughout lockdown, contains editorial content, videos, music, interviews, visual art and spoken word.

FOLDED Zine is a strand of The FOLD, a Great Place Lakes and Dales funded project which uses co-design principles with an aim to encourage participation, empower, share knowledge and build collaborations.

“We would like as many people as possible to enjoy and celebrate the talent we have here in South Cumbria and the Lakes,” say the team, comprising co-producers Hannah Rose Kessler and Marisa Crane, and Events and Opportunities Researcher Abbi Lawson, “and be encouraged to contribute to the next issue!”

Included the first digital issue, co-producers Hannah Rose Kessler and Marisa Crane talk about the theme of ‘Connection’ and why it’s important to them, and spotlight the work of local artist Bamba. There’s a poem in words and video from award-winning spoken word artist, Cat Hepburn, put to music by Hannah Kessler; a feature on Winter Swimming by Tasmin Powell; music from Ava Grace; reflections on isolation and collection from Ella Lou, a Learning Officer at Lakeland Arts, who found 2020 a year of deep reflection; some yoga tips from Marissa; an interview with photographer, Ibiza DJ and Occupational Therapist Ginny Koppenhol; and lots more, all rounded off with a psychedelic music video with music once more from Hannah, “I Really Wanna”, featuring dancers from all over, a video made in lockdown, about finding comfort in mundanity.

It’s an inventive, creative blend of different medium in a well presented, easily navigable package that’s worth checking out, with some lovely art from creators such as Kate Costigan.
