The latest issue of Eagle Times, the magazine of the Eagle Society, arrived over Christmas to the downthetubes dungeon, offering a wide range of features on EAGLE comic.

If you’ve ever considered joining the Eagle Society, now’s a good time to do so, as subscriptions run from January through to year end, no matter when you join. If you’re a dedicated EAGLE fan, you’ll definitely want to enrol now, as details and booking information you about the upcoming annual Eagle Society gathering in April have now been announced.
Plus, there’s the the opportunity to enter a raffle to win Graham Bleathman’s original art published on the cover of the magazine earlier this year, as previously reported.
As usual, this latest edition was a Christmas issue and includes the latest chapter of David Britton’s guide to the western strip, this time covering “Jeff Arnold, Rustler and the 6T6 Outfit”, and the final part of Steve Winders in-depth series on “The Happy Warrior”, the back page strip about British statesman Winston Churchill, written by Clifford Makins, illustrated by Frank Bellamy.

Steve also interviews artist and writer Keith Page about his work drawing Dan Dare for the 1980s EAGLE, and his contributions to other titles, including Commando; and provides a fascinating article on article about the Confederate General Stonewall Jackson strip, which first appeared in Comet, then Thriller Picture Library, before ending up in the EAGLE from 1961 to 1962.

Allan Palmers offers a detailed “retro review” of the Dan Dare Space Annual published in 1963, and there’s the second part of David Britton’s series on “Heros the Spartan” to savour, too.
Plus, Jim Duckett provides two “In and Out of the Eagle” features, he first one is about “Martin Mere”, one of several strips that Frank Hampson created for EAGLE after “The Road of Courage” ended; the second about the Wallis Rigby ‘Anastasia’ Presso Book.
Rounding out with the part two of the detective story “The Case of the Brand New Hat” by Steve Winders and a few short items, including a look at 1960 Christmas celebrations in the Yugoslavian comic that reprinted several EAGLE strips, Plavi Vjesnik, this is another enjoyable issue from the Society.
Eagle Times is, as ever, an entertaining read, with insightful commentary on classic strips, very much “old school” in format in terms of look, but an essential read for fans of Dan Dare et al.
