Heritage Auctions offers British Transformers and X-Men art alongside American classics

Heritage Auctions next Wednesday Comic Art & Illustration Select Auction ends on 16th September 2026 and includes original art by Carl Barks, Milton Caniff, Gene Colan, Al Jaffee, Mike Ploog, Wally Wood and many more.

Offering nearly 400 artworks, there’s art from some British artists in the mix, too, including a Marvel UK Transformers page by Jeff Anderson, a 2000AD “Slaine” page by Simon Davis, and Punisher vs Bullseye art by the late Steve Dillon. There’s an absolutely cracking UK X-Men Annual 2005 colouring page by Dylan Teague, published by Panini and a standout pinup page by Martin Simmonds, in the mix, too.

Jeff Anderson The Transformers #188 Story Page 1 Original Art (Marvel UK, 1988). A new danger enters Marvel UK's Transformers continuity with all the subtlety of a meteor strike. The visitor evades NASA radar, slams down near Mount St. Hilary, and waits until midnight to reveal the Firebug amid a violent eruption of flame, smoke, and shattered earth. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 13.75". Signed by Anderson in the lower margin. Light toning, text past-ups on vellum, Stat logo/credits, adhesive residue in the top margin from a missing header, and light handling wear. In Excellent condition.

Simon Davis 2000 AD Prog #2054 Sláine Story Page 3 Original Art (Rebellion, 2017). The road to the Archons becomes a long, uneasy march. Sláine, Sinead, and Gododin cross the ancient causeway through five narrow panels, their feet and the great bull's hooves carrying them toward answers buried in Britain's past in this scene from "The Brutania Chronicles Book Four: Archon Part Five." Ink and gouache over graphite on Illustration board with an image area of 12.5" x 16.25". Signed by Davis in the right margin. Editorial notes on a vellum overlay taped from the top of the page. In Excellent condition.

Ink and marker over graphite on Marvel Bristol board with an image area of 9.25" x 14.5". Light smudging and signed by Dillion in the bottom right. In Excellent condition.

Martin Simmonds - Pin-Up Illustration Original Art (c. 2020s). Somewhere between portrait and nightmare, Martin Simmonds traps a sinister figure inside a collapsing grid. Red eyes burn through a pale face as fractured borders cut across the body amid black paint, mottled gray textures, and white spatter. Simmonds brings the same fractured, uneasy visual language that made his Eisner-nominated work on The Department of Truth so distinctive. Mixed media on Bristol board with an edge-to-edge image area of 10.75" x 16". Signed. In Excellent condition.

Dylan Teague X-Men Annual 2005 UK Edition Colouring Page Original Art (Panini / Marvel, 2005). Rendered as a coloring book-style page for the UK's more kid-centric X-Men Annual 2005, this piece gives us another look at the cover scene from The Uncanny X-Men #447, featuring the newly introduced X.S.E. team of Wolverine, Marvel Girl (Rachel Grey-Summers), Storm, Cannonball, Nightcrawler, and Bishop battling the classic Captain Britain foe, the Fury! It's a rare rendering of this short-lived X-Men lineup all together. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with a 10" x 15" image area. Whiteout, marginal notes, and handling wear. Signed and in Excellent condition.
Dylan Teague X-Men Annual 2005 UK Edition Colouring Page Original Art (Panini / Marvel, 2005). Rendered as a colouring book-style page for the UK’s more kid-centric X-Men Annual 2005, this piece gives us another look at the cover scene from The Uncanny X-Men #447, featuring the newly introduced X.S.E. team of Wolverine, Marvel Girl (Rachel Grey-Summers), Storm, Cannonball, Nightcrawler, and Bishop battling the classic Captain Britain foe, the Fury. It’s a rare rendering of this short-lived X-Men lineup all together

Newspaper strip fans may also want to check out two “Modesty Blaise” strips, one by Neville Colvin, the other by Patrick Wright; and an as ever example of David Wright’s much sought after “Carol Day”.

Patrick Wright Modesty Blaise #4909 Daily Comic Strip Original Art (London Evening Standard, 1980). Modesty plunges into the depths of Merlin's Pool, following her trusted right-hand man Willie Garvin through a dark opening eighty feet below the surface in this harrowing daily from "The Brethren of Blaise." Scuba diving was just one of Modesty's many talents, which helped carry the resourceful adventurer from the British newspaper page to several screen adaptations. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 18.75" x 5.5". Slight toning, smudging/soiling, text paste-ups, stat logo paste-up, whiteout touch-ups, and handling creases/wear. In Very Good condition.
Patrick Wright Modesty Blaise #4909 Daily Comic Strip Original Art (London Evening Standard, 1980). Modesty plunges into the depths of Merlin’s Pool, following her trusted right-hand man Willie Garvin through a dark opening eighty feet below the surface in this harrowing daily from “The Brethren of Blaise.”
Neville Colvin Modesty Blaise #5627 Daily Comic Strip Original Art (London Times Mirror, 1983). Inspector Brook and his daughter regain consciousness chained in the Sahara Desert in this strip from the "Death in Slow Motion". The daily appears to be from 3-2-83, as the date is handwritten in the top corner. Ink over graphite on Bristol board daily with an image area of 18.75" x 5.5". Slight toning, text paste-ups, sticker fragment in the bottom right margin, whiteout touch-ups, with light handling wear. In Very Good condition.

David Wright Carol Day #3019 Daily Comic Strip Original Art (London Daily Mail, 1966). Adam's morbid discovery in the mysterious cave leaves him shaken in this daily from the "Mystery Man" story arc, featuring a lovely center panel devoted solely to the strip's titular leading lady. Rendered in ink over graphite on illustration board with an image area of 18.5" x 5.25". Slight toning, title/credits and text paste-ups, production notes in the margins, whiteout corrections/touch-ups, and edge/handling wear. In Very Good condition.

Highlights of the auction picked out by Heritage Auctions themselves include a Marvel Spotlight #5 Cover Homage Sketch by Mike Ploog, paying homage to the incendiary Bronze Age debut he helped create on the cover of Marvel Spotlight #5; and an unused Parody Complete 1-Page Story Original Art by Wally Wood, as Egfu Young (as a parody of Chic Young), originally commissioned for MAD #88 (EC, 1964), his last work for MAD magazine.

Mike Ploog Marvel Spotlight #5 Cover Homage Sketch Original Art (undated). Ghost Rider rides into the blazing spotlight in this fiery sketch by his co-creator Mike Ploog, paying homage to the incendiary Bronze Age debut he helped create on the cover of Marvel Spotlight #5. Ploog made his mark with memorable macabre takes on Marvel's horror heroes in the early 1970s, including Werewolf by Night, Ghost Rider, Frankenstein's Monster, and Man-Thing. Rendered in graphite on 8.5" x 11" paper. Minor corner creasing and handling wear. Signed by Ploog in the lower right image area. Otherwise, in Excellent condition.

Wally Wood MAD #88 Unused Parody Complete 1-Page Story Original Art (EC, 1964). Wally Wood's last work for MAD magazine! Created as part of a "Comic For Publications That Don't Have Comics" feature, this parody of the Blondie comic strip would be completely re-drawn by Bob Clarke for publication. The original Wally Wood gag was actually rejected by Bill Gaines (Editor-in-Chief). As documented in the book The Life and Legend of Wallace Wood, this upset Wood so much that he quit MAD magazine completely! The parody gag was rendered ink and Zipatone on two sections of Bristol board that have been conjoined with production tape for a combined image area of 10" x 11.5". Signed as "Egfu Young" (as a parody of Chic Young) in the lower right. Lightly toned and in Very Good condition.
Wally Wood MAD #88 Unused Parody Complete 1-Page Story Original Art (EC, 1964)

Created as part of a Comic For Publications That Don’t Have Comics feature, this parody of the Blondie comic strip would be completely re-drawn by Bob Clarke for publication. The original Wally Wood gag was actually rejected by Bill Gaines (Editor-in-Chief). As documented in the book The Life and Legend of Wallace Wood, this upset Wood so much that he quit MAD magazine completely.

Barry Smith and Syd Shores Chamber of Darkness #3 Story Page 7 Original Art (Marvel, 1970). Love gets the last word in "The Warlock Tree!" as Jane's attempt to draw the sword ends with a bolt from above. Barry Windsor-Smith unleashes Moorg across the page in a huge spectral close-up before the cursed tree burns and Dave carries Jane to safety. Produced in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". In the published version, the final panel was cropped tighter and the bottom narration was reformatted for the story's later reprinting in Giant-Size Chillers #3 in 1975. Panel 2 and the lower left corner of Panel 1 are patched-in original art. Moderate toning, foxing, smudging/soiling, whiteout touch-ups, blue pencil marks, tape over stat page number, and handling wear. In Very Good condition. From the Barry Windsor-Smith Collection.

They’ve also highlighted art by another British great, Barry Smith, delivering alongside Syd Shores: a page from Chamber of Darkness #3, published by Marvel, in 1970. Taken from the Barry Windsor-Smith Collection, love gets the last word in The Warlock Tree! as Jane’s attempt to draw the sword ends with a bolt from above.
