The BBC has published an invitation to tender for the production of Doctor Who. The contract is for a multi-episodic series (including specials) for transmission in 2028/29, with an option to extend the contract at BBC’s discretion to produce a second series.
It’s offered on a work for hire basis with the BBC continuing to broadcast the programme and retaining all rights.
The production will need to qualify as a regional production under two of the three Ofcom Regional criteria and the successful bidder will be expected to establish a production base in the agreed region. The BBC has a preference for a Wales qualification.
The tender to find a new production team for the long running series follows the departure of showrunner Russell T Davies, production company Bad Wolf, and the expiration of Disney’s co-production deal.
While that deadline may seem tight, a surprise to potential bidders after all the previous discussions. It’s a call for a the invitation won’t come as a surprise to potential production companies. Those interested will already have surely pitch have an initial proposal ready to go.
Radio Times has reported Production studios including BBC Studios, World Productions, and Electric Entertainment have expressed interest in competing for the series during the BBC’s competitive tender process
