Crowdfunding Spotlight: A Tale of Shadows

British comic artist and illustrator Lyndon White recently launched his second Kickstarter campaign, for his new comic A Tale of Shadows, a fantasy comic set in a world ideologically split by the arrival of new technology.

The comic is written by podcaster Paul Clark-Forse, who has written a range of comics and is a key writer for indie publisher Dead Canary Comics (he has a story in their recently released anthology The Fitzroy, a collaborative project with Dresden Pictures, set in 1950s Britain), with additional art by Tyler Wilson, a freelance illustrator and artist currently working on gallery shows, whose work can be seen across the UK and ranges from portraiture to detailed cityscapes.

Lyndon, who successfully funded his stylised, horror comic Lost & Found, through Kickstarter last year, has been a regular face at various British comic events over the past few years, including the past weekend’s MCM Birmingham, and you may have seen his work  “The Light Of Calm Springs”, a spooky tale that featured in the Disconnected Press anthology Disconnected Volume 3 (written by Jordan Sam Adams), or read Cosmic Fish, a 20 page comic published by Dead Canary Comics, written by Rudra Purkayasth.

As the creative team outline in the project’s promotional video, this project melds a number of influences to create a new tale, which centres on the story of Felix, a young loner, who finds himself caught in the middle of an escalating confrontation between religious group ‘The Men of the Way’ and a ragtag team of rogue scientists/artists, the Sciencestitions, when “The Machine” is unveiled in his hometown.

If the appeal is successful, “The majority of funds will go towards printing and because we intend to create something that has a level of print quality, the costs can stack up pretty quickly,” says Lyndon.

A Tale of Shadows is something the three of us have been working on for awhile. Decisions on the story and the art direction have come through excessive planning to make sure we deliver a professional, finished product. Book One is complete and the story is planned for a total of five books.

“The outline for each book is already complete so you don’t have to worry about a ‘second issue never coming out’ or not ‘finishing the series’, he adds. “We are working on it. We just need some help to get Book One out in to your hands.”
