Last October multi Eisner nominated writer John Chalmers and artist Sandra Marrs, collectively known as Metaphrog, were invited to exhibit their artwork at the Lakes International Comic Art Festival 2014 as well as run comics creation workshops. Their artwork exhibition in Kendal Library featured work from their latest Louis book, Night Salad, but they also gave a first public glimpse of pages from their adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s The Red Shoes.
As we said in the downthetubes’ Lakes’ Creators piece, that story plus others were due to be published by New York publisher Papercutz in late 2015 as The Red Shoes And Other Tales. John and Sandra have just told us that the publication date of the 66 page hardback book has now been set as 13 October 2015.
As the child of peasants, Karen grew up with a pair of simple red shoes. Then, when her parents died, Karen was adopted by a rich old woman who gave Karen a new pair of red shoes that would make princesses green with envy. This newfound wealth causes Karen to forget her humble origins and grow up to become a cruel and vain adult. Then, one day, the red shoes that sparked her greed come to life and steer Karen down a path she never would have imagined in her wildest dreams.
The book will also include Metaphrog’s adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Match Girl plus their own tale The Glass Case. Both of these short strips were in the exquisite, and now long sold out, Winter’s Tales limited edition comic which was reviewed on downthetubes here.
As a teaser for The Red Shoes And Other Tales Papercutz have released the following trailer.
There are more details of the other books published by Papercutz on the Papercutz website.
Metaphrog will be at Wonderlands: The UK Graphic Novel Expo at Sunderland University on Saturday 30 May 2015 where they will be taking part, along with Porcelain writer Benjamin Read and the Stan Lee Excelsior Award’s Paul Register, in the Young Adult graphic novel panel to be chaired by Dr Mel Gibson.
