Here’s this week’s list of comics on sale now in comic shops across the UK. As usual, our list highlights the work of British creators and publishers. You may also be already thinking about Christmas (some people do, advertisers, mainly), so you may also like to check out this year’s crop of annuals, which are invading bookshops at a steady pace right now.
The big release this week is the first issue Titan Comics Four Doctors crossover, a Doctor Who event featuring three of the modern Doctors in the first issue, which opens with a cameo (and only) appearance of the War Doctor, played by John Hurt on TV. (Whether or not the “Four Doctors” umbrella title for this series includes the War Doctor remains to be seen, although the first issue does suggest it will only be the Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth incarnations).
Writer Paul Cornell has clearly immersed himself in Who lore, respecting the continuity established by the Titan Comics series as well as the wider established timeline (such as it is in Doctor Who!). Much of this opening episode is set up: the War Doctor on a devastated Marinus, its much-evolved inhabitants battling the Daleks; Clara meeting the Tenth and Eleventh Doctor’s comic companions in Paris and trying to prevent the Doctors meeting… which, of course proves impossible; and the issue ends on a stonker of a cliffhanger, which, without giving anything away, that harks back to the Ninth Doctor’s on screen adventures.
Paul deftly introduces the cast – aware this crossover will perhaps be picked up by some not already following the Titan books. He gives as much attention to the comic-only companions, Gabby and Alice, as he does to TV companion Clara, making all three believable and entertaining as they try to cope with each Doctor’s foibles. There’s instant friction between the different incarnations – particularly the Tenth and Twelfth Doctors – that has a wonderful resonance for those of us who recall The Three Doctors story of the Pertwee years.
Complementing Paul’s script is Neil Edwards accomplished, outstanding art. Not only is he a skilled visual storyteller, carrying along the reader at speed in style, but he also adds to the script with little touches that capture the Doctors in particular with considerable skill. Given that half this opening issue’s pages are set in a French cafe with characters at loggerheads, his interpretation of the script is much to his credit, as such pages could have been awfully dull in less capable hands. His likenesses for the TV characters are great, particularly Clara.
Paul has set up the series nicely in this opening issue, weaving a number of strands to his intriguing tale that should satisfy even the most ardent of Doctor Who fans. The Titan Comics team have pulled the stops out on this book and it’s well worth taking a look, in my view.
If you want to hear what Paul and Neil have to say about the project, check out their Panel to Panel interview, embedded here on downthetubes; and have a look at our sneak preview of the issue, which we published a while back.
On a totally different tack, I’m pleased to see that Is She Available, the work of Igor Goldkind and a huge number of artists from many different fields, including Rian Hughes and Glenn Fabry, wrapped in a cover by Bill Sienkiewicz, is now available in comic shops. We gave this project a plug earlier in the year, and this groundbreaking collaboration, featuring between Igor and 15 artists from the world of comics, fantasy and fine art deserves the kudos it’s been getting – and more sales!
Well worth tracking down, too, is the new War Stories collection, which sees the original tales penned by Garth Ennis back in print for the first time in ten years. Fully re-mastered, the collection includes strips drawn by Dave Gibbons, John Higgins and Chris Weston, among others.
As we mentioned last week, the Zenith: Apex Edition – a full size reproduction from 2000AD publishers Rebellion of the original artwork from Grant Morrison and Steve Yeowell’s seminal superhero story from the late 1980s – is out this week, too. This edition will not be available digitally and is limited to only 1,000 first editions, 200 available from 2000AD with a limited edition bookplate signed by Steve Yeowell.
Don’t forget that despite many British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are still comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano, Commando, Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini’s superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who Comic (collecting their strips from the US format titles) Mega, TOXIC and many others.
The Hachette Judge Dredd Collection is also on sale now, but you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying it as Part Works are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.
Plus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic is on sale in all Waitrose supermarkets as well as available on subscription and through its dedicated iPad app.
