Something for the Weekend: British Comic Shop Releases (20th August 2015)

2000AD Prog 1944

Here’s  this week’s list of comics on sale now in comic shops across the UK. As usual, our list highlights the work of British creators and publishers.

You know, thinking about the headline I’ve given this item, wouldn’t it be great if there were more comics to read in your local barbers? And I’m not just taking a two month old copy of Private Eye

The latest 2000AD (Prog 1944) and Judge Dredd Megazine offer their usual accomplished mix of Thrillpower and scares this week. Henry Flint’s art on “Judge Dredd: Enceladus: Old Life”, written by by Rob Williams (who’s also doing a great job on DC Comics Martian Manhunter right now), simply has to be seen to be believed, so do check out the issue, on sale in comic shops, digitally and in your genuine, right their on the high street newsagent. (And do enjoy “The Haunting of Hex House”, because that looks really creepy…

Doctor Who: Four-Doctors #2

A panel from Doctor Who: Four-Doctors #2. Neil Edwards art on this book is truly mind blowing.

Titan Comics Doctor Who: Four Doctors (#2) is one of the highlights of the week for me – yes, the story is a bit “timey-wimey” and convoluted as three modern-day Doctors evade the monstrous reapers and head to Marinus, a planet none of them remember… but Paul Cornell tells the story in style and Neil Edwards art is, quite frankly, simply astonishing – not just in terms of technical skill, but storytelling and composition. I was disappointed when I couldn’t snag him for a project back in 2007 (as it turned out, he had a lucky escape because it all went a bit pear-shaped)… I knew then how talented he was and Four Doctors just confirms it.

Go. Seek. Buy.

Also recommended – if you can find a copy, because we’ve heard there were scarcity on #1 – is another Titan title, Rivers of London: Body Work (#2). The huge success of Ben Aaronovitch’s brilliant novels clearly pass a lot of comic shop owners by, and #1 sold out fast in many places, to the dismay of his fans. Let’s hope #2, again featuring art by Lee Sullivan and script support from author and former Doctor Who script editor Andrew Cartmel, had stronger orders.

On the non UK creator side of things this week, I’d like to give a shout out for another artist I’ve had the pleasure to work with – Croatian artist Maxim Simic, who provides the art on the latest issue of Boom! Studios Escape from New York (#9), written by Christopher Sebela, which sees Snake hellbent on revenge and returns to where it all started – the New York City prison…

Along with ace write Miljenko Horvatic, Maxim delivered some terrific work on STRIP: The Adventure Comics Magazine, including the terrific, sadly unfinished “Denizens” story, and the duo have a number of great projects they’ve pitched. I hope Maxim’s work on Escape enables them to see some of these projects in print, because they deserve to be.

Follow Maxim on Twitter @maximsimic; find him on DeviantArt; and check out his Tumblr here.

Oh, and if you’re a The Simpsons fan, do check out Simpsons Comics #223 – Max Davison is on script duties and having read some of his work as a current Titan project, HOME, developed, the man is seriously funny.

Don’t forget that despite many British publishers lack of faith in full-blown cover to cover comic strip action and humour, there are still comics on sale in newsagents that still delight in bringing you such subversive delights, including The Beano, Commando, Judge Dredd Megazine, Panini’s superhero titles and VIZ, with great strips also featuring in titles such as Doctor Who MagazineDoctor Who Adventures, Titan’s Doctor Who Comic (collecting their strips from the US format titles) Mega, TOXIC and many others.

The Hachette Judge Dredd Collection is also on sale now, but you may now have to subscribe if you want to continue buying it as Part Works are not distributed in newsagents after their first few issues.

Plus, the wonderful Phoenix Comic is on sale in all Waitrose supermarkets as well as available on subscription and through its dedicated iPad app.

• You may also be already thinking about Christmas (some people do, advertisers, mainly), so you may also like to check out this year’s crop of annuals, which are invading bookshops at a steady pace right now.

The Bizarre Adventures Of Gilbert & Sullivan - Final

Bizarre Adventures Of Gilbert & Sullivan Graphic Novel
Writer/Artist/Cover Artist: Laura Howell

Think you know comics? Think you know history? Think you know comic operas? Think again! The Bizarre Adventures of Gilbert & Sullivan mixes fact with fiction and the sublime with the ridiculous to outrageous effect. High-energy manga-style art collides head-on (then bows politely in apology) with historical facts and faces to produce topsy-turvy tales the like of which you’ve never before seen.

Cody Pomeray had a gift for looking inside a person’s soul with just a glance. This ability served him well, as the crook blew through the early 1980s, finding marks and picking them clean. But one fateful night, he targeted the wrong man… and was sentenced to the most savage prison in California. Pomeray would have been beaten to death on his first day if not for the intervention of Barnaby Creed, the most powerful crime lord in the Southland. Now five years later, Pomeray’s out on parole, robbed of his special ability, and tasked with doing Creed “a little favor.” He has no idea he’s just stepped into a long con, and this time… he’s the mark. Includes Duane Swierczynski’s first issue script as a bonus feature!
