Long time waiting: the work of Mœbius is to be re-published in English at long last, by Dark Horse

US publisher Dark Horse has announced that the library of Mœbius, one of the most influential and respected artists in the history of comics and cartooning, will arrive on store shelves, in English, in a gorgeous series of hardcover volumes available for the first time in nearly 20 years.

Issues over the English language rights to Mœbius work has kept the work of this brilliant artist off the shelves of British book shops for some time, to the dismay of his fans.

With a vast array of work showcasing his mastery of realist drawing, Jean Giraud — better known as Mœbius — is one of the most influential bandes dessinées cartoonists in history, with work that helped to define the landscape of science fiction and fantasy comics. His expertise was also showcased on work in film, with credits including Alien, Tron, The Fifth Element and more.

“As a true visionary in the comics medium, it is a pleasure to once again publish collections of Mœbius’ work,” said Dark Horse president and publisher Mike Richardson. “His influence on contemporary comics is undeniable, and it’s a true honor to be working with Isabelle Giraud, his wife and partner, to help ensure that his legacy will continue to live on for a new generation of readers.”

“Many of us, for many years, have lived in dismay that the works of one of this planets master artists were unpublished for two decades in the English language.
Some of us did what we could to help resolve the issue, going to great lengths in some cases,” notes comic artist Dave Taylor, who worked with the artist and shared his memories of that experience here back in 2012, and background and art they worked on together for an Arzak strip here.

“While we sat, in our dismayed state, we watched as series after series of his work were published in numerous languages, some of which seemed quite bizarre to come before/in place of English. For some of us, it became deeply troubling, depressing and mind numbingly frustrating.”

Needless to say, Dave’s delighted by the news from Dark Horse – as are many, many other creators. Let’s just hope that is all of the great man’s work and not material more readily available.

More information on The Mœbius Library will be available soon.
