Great British Comic Characters Reinvented: Nemesis the Warlock – and Night Raven!

Johnny Nemo: The Nemesis Sanction by Mal Earl

Johnny Nemo: The Nemesis Sanction by Mal Earl

Aces Weekly contributor Mal Earl simply couldn’t choose which of his favourite British comic characters he wanted to reinvent for our current competition – so we got three!

Artist and writer Mal returned to producing comics three years ago, after a 15 year hiatus. Along with many other projects, he has a new strip in the latest volume of David Lloyd’s brilliant digital anthology Aces Weekly (Volume 19!) on sale now, an unconventional war story called “The Bridge”, as we reported here. He’s also creator of the ongoing, amazing Bulletproof Nylon burlesquenoir pulp project, which Mal tells us will resume in January 2016.

Johnny Nemo: The Nemesis Sanction features two great 2000AD characters – Johnny Nemo and Nemesis the Warlock.

New London of 2921 is a crowded, filthy slime-pit awash with Death-Juice junkies, Latin-spouting armored fascists, exploding nuns and a religious cult who worship Bing Crosby’s left testicle. It’s also home to ultra-violent, foul-mouthed private eye Johnny Nemo – a streetwise PI who deals in death… and simple solutions to complex problems!

Johnny Nemo is the award-winning writer, Peter Milligan (All-New Doop, Hellblazer, Shadowman) and the late, great artist Brett Ewins (Bad Company, Skreemer) and Titan Comics published a collection of the stories last year.

Nemesis the Warlock, champion of  rebellion, is the creation of Pat Mills and Kevin O’Neill, first seen on Termight, a world at the heart of a cruel galactic empire. A world devastated by nuclear warfare. Deep below ground its inhabitants try to eke out a mere existence, continually threatened by the Terminators, lead by the diabolically evil Torquemada. There is a resistance though, and a new kind of hero. Rebellion has collected all the Nemesis the Warlock adventures in several different titles down the years.

Not content with his versions of Nemo and Nemesis, Mal also sent us his version of Night Raven, the pulp hero written by Steve Parkhouse and drawn initially by David Lloyd, followed by John Bolton, in stories set between the World Wars, battling organised crime in New York and Chicago. for Marvel UK’s Hulk Weekly way back in the 1970s. The character has enjoyed a long life in comics, charted in this article on one of his later appearances here on downthetubes.

The original Night Raven stories from Hulk Weekly were last collected way back in 1990 by Marvel UK.
