Cats Go Geek with CacaoFurniture’s Cat Houses

We all know cats love a cardboard box, right? Well, Bulgarian company CacaoFurniture has run with that in a big way and created a range of cardboard cat houses – some inspired by well known SF icons, including Doctor Who‘s TARDIS, Star Wars and, perhaps unsurprisingly, Hello Kitty.

We have absolutely no idea is any of the designs are officially licensed – we’ve dropped the company a line to ask – but there’s a whole range of designs on offer, besides the ones that caught our intention, including a Royal Carriage and a design inspired by the planned “Mars One” Mars Mission.

They are, apparently, able to withstand scratching and biting from your feline companion. I’m not quite sure how long they’d last in multi-cat households, but I imagine most of downthetubes readers could easily patch up even the most damaged TARDIS, should they need to.

CacaoFurniture has developed a whole line of elaborate easy-to-build cardboard houses for cats, all eco-friendly and glue-free.

Velislav and Dimitar, two friends who run CaacoFurniture, feel cardboard is underestimated as a construction material, and tried to find out how to create something nice with it.

“As we have a cat in our team and she was around all the time during our experiments, we realized that she is obsessed from the cardboard too,” they say, “and we decided to build something for her.

“Cardboard is easy to find, and it’s easy to make several cuts and to get something from it, but it is a challenge to create a beautiful and eye catching product. Luckily Velislav has a lot of experience with 3D CAD/CAM software in his job and he accepted the challenge.”

Velislav and Dimitar spent several months researching their plans, exchanging ideas and concept proofing, making prototypes and, of course, getting them “kitty tested”. Then, they took the project further after seeing a news item about the planned Mars One mission, and decided cats shouldn’t miss out on “geek culture”, any more than their adoring owners.. The Martian Cardboard Cat House was added to their product range – and they’ve run away with plenty more designs since.

If that’s wasn’t enough, they team have ever created a line of cardboard mice to round off the look, just the start of what looks will become a massive range of cardboard furniture for pets – and those pesky humans, too.
