TORCH, Oxford’s Research Centre in the Humanities third seminar of the term will take place tomorrow, Thursday 10th November 2016, at 5.15pm and will feature a talk from Roger Sabin, Professor of Popular Culture at Central Saint Martins in London, on “The Origins of Comics Criticism“.

Professor Sabin is the author of Adult Comics: An Introduction and the excellent resource Comics, Comix and Graphic Novels, as well as a number of other writings on comics. In this talk, he’ll explore the way in which the new medium of comics was perceived by critics in the late 19th century, focusing on the UK (at the time the world-leading producer), arguing that this was the origin of modern formulations of ‘pop culture’.

The event will take place in the TORCH Seminar Room, which is on the Third Floor of the Radcliffe Humanities Building, accessed from the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter on Woodstock Road. There is no need to sign-up and all are welcome, and refreshments will be available.

Launched in May 2013, TORCH provides an important opportunity for Oxford’s humanities scholars to collaborate with researchers across other disciplines, and institutions; work with academics across all stages of their academic careers; develop partnerships with public and private institutions; engage with wider audiences; and bring together academic research, diverse industries, and the performing arts.

• The TORCH blog – torch.ox.ac.uk/comic – has regular new posts and to like/follow the Centre on Facebook and Twitter @TORCHComicsOx, where they are sharing information about other comics-related events in Oxford and the UK more widely
