Comic creators David Hine and Mark Stafford will be interviewed by Alex Fitch at the free Cartoon County in Brighton on Monday, discussing their brilliant recent graphic novel Lip Hook, published last year by SelfMadeHero, and their forthcoming book The Bad Bad Place, coming from Soaring Penguin Press at the end of this year.
David Hine has been working in comics since the early 1980s. After his graphic novel Strange Embrace was published in the US, he was hired by Marvel to write several series, including District X, Daredevil: Redemption, Silent War and Spider-Man Noir.
He also created Poison Candy for Tokyopop and The Bulletproof Coffin (with Shaky Kane) for Image Comics, and worked on numerous books for DC, including Batman, Detective Comics, Azrael and The Spirit.
More recently, he collaborated with Mark Stafford on the British Comic Award-nominated adaptation of Victor Hugo’s The Man Who Laughs and the Arts Council-backed graphic novel Lip Hook, which launches from SelfMadeHero at last year’s Lakes International Comic Art Festival.
Mark Stafford is the co-creator of the Cherubs! graphic novel with Bryan Talbot, who in addition to his work with David Hine, is also the longstanding cartoonist-in-residence at The Cartoon Museum, London.
The Bad Bad Place is currently being serialised in the Soaring Penguin anthology Meanwhile and a limited amount of issues #1-9 will be on sale and for signing on the night from company co-publisher Tim Pilcher.
“If any of you are fans of The Wicker Man and Folk Horror Revival I thoroughly recommend you get down for this night of ‘Rural Unease'”, Tim enthuses.
Cartoon County is an association of over 100 cartoonists and comic artists in Sussex that offers a range of events and exhibitions across the year. Launched in 1993, it aims to increase the appreciation of cartoons as an art form, show the quality and diversity of cartoon and comic strip artists and to encourage the public in cartoon art.
