Comic creator Brendan McCarthy among many guests at Virtual Animation Dingle next weekend

2000AD comic creator Brendan McCarthy is among a host of terrific guests for Virtual Animation Dingle next weekend (24th – 25th March 2021).

Virtual Animation Dingle (replacing the highly-regarded annual physical event thus year) offers the very best in animation content from all around the globe through conference, workshops, screenings and awards. Speakers at the live conference include Oscar-winning director Don Hall, fresh from his work on Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon, and known for his work on Disney’s Big Hero 6 and Moana; Madeline Sharafian, Oscar-nominated director of Pixar’s Burrow; Steven Clay Hunter, director of Pixar’s OUT; and Peter Lord, from Aardman Studios, who has over 50 years in the business of animation.

Screening some 2500 minutes of the very best in both professional and student shorts and features from Ireland and around the world, the festival offers students a global perspective on the art of developing, financing, and producing animated content, for screens both big and small.

Brendan McCarthy will lead a workshop, “Your Graphic Novel iP for Animation”, hosted by illustrator Ben Hennessy, talking about his animation work, from development, writing, storyboards and production design.

Quite apart from his long career in comic, for over 20 years working in Hollywood, Brendan was the original production designer for world’s first cgi animated tv series rEBOOT (pre Pixar) and worked in animation for 10 years and then on to live action +vfx Hollywood features, eventually co-writing and designing Oscar/ Golden Globe winning Mad Max Fury Road. He was also hired by Lorne Micheals’ Saturday Night Live to create the visuals for the Coneheads movie.

Ben Hennessy is an Irish based illustrator who’s worked
as a character designer and comic book artist, but primarily as a storyboard artist for shows on Cbeebies, nickelodeon, PBS and Adult Swim. Alongside his art career, he also co-founded and co-Directed Pegbar, an animation social networking group that thrives today.

Also part of the event are Boulder Media, who have an animation studio in Dublin, who have made an unreleased Micronauts animated series, first announced in 2017, and Dean DeBlois, who was writing and directing a Micronauts feature film. Let’s hope for some sort of Micronauts updates…
