Hatch is a unique character, the brainchild of artist/writer Glenn B Fleming, who also brought us the wonderful Jack Kirby: A Personal Journey documentary through successful crowdfunding last year.
Hatch the strip, is, simply, a visual experience, a wordless tale can be enjoyed by all peoples in the universe, whatever language(s) they may understand, which has previously appeared in publications such as the comics zine Crikey!
“There are no language barriers with this strip,” Glenn insists. “Translated words can change the mood, meaning or substance of any writing. Only ‘sound effects’ are used; there is no dialogue.
“All Hatch’s adventures are simply a visual experience, a character in all his lonely ‘glory’; lost, bewildered and, yeah, amazed.”
Hatch, however, is not just an ordinary cartoon strip. Far from it.
“Hatch is, in fact, a builder, an experimenter and (occasionally) a time traveller,” Glenn explains, “and although he is a ‘man’ lost in time and space, his world is not without incident, not without accident and certainly not without meaning.
“Hatch endures in us all; struggling to come to terms with himself, his world and his universe. A universe he marvels at, embraces and is ultimately frustrated with.”
Hatch: The Next Day – already a third of its way toward securing its £1250 funding target – offers a 32-page A4 comic “full of humour and amazement”, says Glenn. “Generally, Hatch’s amazement, but hopefully yours too!”
As well as an adventure featuring this unique little guy, you can also make a pledge that includes an A5 20 page black and white sister volume of unpublished Hatch sketches. There’s a hardback ‘De-Lux’ edition of both comic and sketches, too.
“The De-Lux volume contains a further ten pages of previously unseen artwork from Hatch’s early years,” Glenn reveals, “scanned directly from the originals in my archive.
Hatch: The Next Day is a quirky little project from a hugely talented creator, and your support not only helps Glenn make the comic for backers, but get it out to comic shops and into the hands of comic book collectors, too – wherever they reside!
UPDATE, 20th March 2018 – Previously launched on Kickstarter this project was repromoted on Indiegogo in March 2018
