There are a ton of great projects in the works right now, including subCULTURE: On In-Crowds & Outliers, a 128-page hardcover anthology, where over a dozen comics are intercut with essays, photos, and illustrations that set the stage and make a scene.
subCULTURE is the brainchild of Shelly Bond, editor of the Eisner award-winning series Bitter Root, Fables, and the comics-to-TV hits iZombie. The project, seeking support here on Kickstarter, salutes the subsets and coteries of the 20th & 21st centuries. “It’s a tribute to the social disruptors who razed the art and style status quo in order to form a more perfect cultural revolution,” says Shelly. “It’s about survival in a world we no longer recognise.”

The contributors include Gilbert Hernandez, Natalia Hernandez, and Carol Kovinick Hernandez, plus Davidt Dunlop, Asimina Hollingworth, Clio Isadora, Beck Kubrick, Imogen Mangle, Dilraj Mann, Oliver Mertz & Philip Bond, Peter Milligan & James Romberger, L. Pidge, Mark Mosedale & Simon Smith, William Potter & Anna Readman, Liz Prince and Lid Thom.
Plus, essays on The New Romantics, New Wave City, Goth, Bowie and more by writers Marguerite Van Cook, Cecil Castellucci, my old Marvel UK buddy, Steve Cook, Jayde Perkin, and PM Buchan.
If all that isn’t enough for you, it also comes with scene-stealing photos by Carol Kovinick Hernandez and Steve Cook.
