Crowdfunding Spotlight: The Comics Courier, a new journal dedicated to in-depth comics criticism

The Comics Courier

Cultural critic and artist Tiffany Babb is running a Kickstarter for The Comics Courier, a new US-based magazine about comics. The crowdfunder for the tabloid size, twice-yearly publication, which will launch next year, has struck a chord with fans of critique in print, raising close to £7000 of its fairly modest £3438 goal.

Tiffany Babb is a comics critic and editor with nine years of experience in the industry, who’s served as deputy editor of Popverse, as co-editor of the Eisner Award winning PanelxPanel, and has written comics criticism for The Comics JournalThe AV ClubPublishers Weekly, and The Comic Book Herald

“Comics criticism is in a dire spot,” she feels. “Spaces for writing about comics are disappearing at a worrisome pace, and more than ever, comics critics need support – and a place to write.

“… Our core goal is to create a space for serious (and silly) writing about comics and to share our love for the medium, the creators, and the comics themselves.”

Some high-profile names are attached to the project, including letterer and writer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, Babb’s co-editor on the Eisner Award-winning PanelxPanel, which went on hiatus last year after publishing 70 issues.

The Comics Courier will feature in-depth essays and reviews by Babb, Hassan, Los Angeles-based writer and illustrator Dave Baker (Forest Hills Bootleg Society), comic book creator Kat Calamia (Newsarama, IGN),author Sean Dillon, Lisa and Brad Gullickson, the team behind the podcast, Comic Book Couples Counseling, frequent PanelxPanel contributor, writer and visual artist Lillie Hochwender, , writer, editor, and media scholar Carrie McClain, New York-based screen and magazine writer, Jim McDermott, Liam McGuire, owner of Comic Frontier, and Douglas Wolk (All of the Marvels, Reading Comics).

The format of the twice-yearly publication will be a tabloid-sized newspaper and there’s a retailer tier on the Kickstarter for comic shops interested in stocking the new title, set to launch in February 2025.
