It’s been a busy time for smashing comic artist Dave Taylor, who I first worked with way back in the early 1990s at Marvel UK, on Warheads and Gene Dogs. Not only is he hard at work drawing the Twelfth Doctor comic for Titan Comics: the past few weeks have seen him making numerous public appearances, at Preston Comic Con and First Age Comics Lancaster, to name but two.
Later this month, he’s heading (along with a huge number of other comic creators) to Thought Bubble Festival in Leeds, and he will be offering his fans their first chance to buy a copy of his new self-published work: Dave Taylor: A Brief History.
“I keep getting asked, for years now, to produce an ‘Art Of’ book, so here it is,” Dave told me. “As it says in the title, it’s a brief look at some of my fave work in the industry. It occurred to me recently that I probably now have enough material to do a half decent collection. This happened a few days ago, so purely on a whim, I literally jumped out of bed and started putting it together.
“Two days later it was finished! I’m publishing the thing myself, not sure how many yet.”
For now you will only be able to buy the collection at dave’s personal appearances. He’ll be at Table 34 in the New Dock Hall at Thought Bubble (click here for a map) and will also be at the Malta Comic Con at the end of the month.
Dave has worked on many mainstream books with many highly respected writers, including Batman with Matt Wagner, Alan Grant, Karl Kesel and Chip Kidd, “Judge Dredd” for 2000AD with John Wagner, Alan Grant, Robbie Morrison and Ian Edginton, Arzak with Jean Moebius Giraud, and Prophet with Brandon Graham.
His adult only series Tongue Lash, set in “the Moebius universe” has been published worldwide. His Batman: Death by Design, with Chip Kidd, is a New York Times best seller… twice! Taylor has also contributed design work for computer games, TV and Film.
As well as Doctor Who, he is also working on a new Judge Dredd story and his forthcoming series of graphic novels Tom Tom Macoubre.
