Egmont has just launched a dedicated web site for its Classic Comics – a vast and cherished archive of retro comics housed in one of their London warehouses, that the company has been working on digitising since 2005.
The Classic Comics range features some of the most iconic comic strips from the last 60 years including Thunderbirds, Battle Picture Weekly (known especially for the Charley’s War stories) as well as the footballing legend Roy of the Rovers and spooky tales about the mysterious world of Misty.
Egmont owns the rights to several classic British comics and most of the characters that feature in them, providing those characters were created after January 1970 (with some exceptions), including the adventure comics Action, Crisis, Jet, Scream!, Speed and Tornado, Wildcat and Wow!; sports titles such as Hot-Shot, Nipper, Scorcher and Score’n’Roar; the humour comics Big Comic Fortnightly, Buster, Cheeky, Cor!!, Funny Monthly, Jackpot, Knockout, Krazy, Monster Fun, Oink!, School Fun, Shiver’n’Shake and Whizzer and Chips and Whoopee; and the girls comics Bonnie, Jinty, Katy, Lindy, Penny, Pixie, Princess, Sally, Sandie and Tammy; and junior titles such as Dickory Dock, Funtime, Fun-to-do, Fun-to-know, Hey Diddle Diddle, Playbox, Playgroup, Robin, Seesaw, Sunny, Teddy Bears, Playtime and Toby.
Classic Comics are available to download on the iTunes store for Apple devices and some are available in different printed formats on the Egmont website. A selection of them are also available through the company’s licensed partners, such as Titan Books who have published collections of strips from Battle, a series of Charley’s War collections, as well as Roy of the Rovers books.
“We’ve spent time and care digitising the collection so they can be enjoyed by fans both old and new,” say Egmont. “These comics truly are a precious and important part of British literary history and we are proud to have played our part in bringing them back to life under the Egmont Classic Comics imprint.”
