Fanzine Flashback and a FANSCENE update: Fantasy Advertser #80, from 1983, revisited

One of the latest digital additions to the Classic UK Comics Zines archive is Fantasy Advertiser #80, edited by Martin Lock and John Hay, published in August 1983, with a cover by Kev F. Sutherland.

Fantasy Advertser #80 - Cover

In this issue, Alan Moore talks to Pete Scott about V for Vendetta, and then Tharg Richard Burton talks to Kev Sutherland about 2000AD. Plus, who wouldn’t want to vote in the latest Fantasy Advertser ballot (late votes will not be counted).

The issue, crammed with advertising for comic shops past (and some, still, thankfully, present) includes contributions from Mike Cruden, Andrew Robins, Dave Harwood, Lew Stringer, Chris Padgett, Keith Williams, et al.

This addition to the fantastic archive comes courtesy of Rob Kirby (From Cents to Pence) who provided the scans.

Archivist, artist and publisher David Hathaway-Price plans to take things slow and steady this year, but if possible, he wants to publish two issues of his excellent publication FANSCENE, an ongoing celebration of British comics fandom, which now spans seven decades.

A reminder, then, that the first of these issues is planned to be a celebration of Strip zines, Comix, and the small press. If you produced, were involved with, (or are now producing) a strip based fanzine over the last 50 years and have a story to tell, please get in touch with David.

FANSCENE Issue 5 - Batman Special

“I’d also really like to see people update or revisit characters they created years ago, and depict them with their current skill level, or produce tribute pieces of other people’s creations,” he says.

The deadline for Issue 7 will be 30th April 2021, so a good three months to work on your contribution. Hopeful publication date being the end of May.

“If no one objects, I’d like Issue 8 to be a celebration of all things Fantasy Advertiser, as 2021 will mark ten years since the last Print issue of the zine appeared.

“The title itself straddles the whole history of British comics fandom, and I’d love to involve as many people who loved the zine as possible, be it staff, contributors, readers or rivals.”

The deadline for this issue will be 30th June 2021, for a publication date of early August. As this is being announced so early, it means that people have six months to work on their articles, so hopefully plenty of time for everyone who wants to contribute to put something together.
