The winers of the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards 2018 were announced at San Diego Comic Con recently. The nominees were for works published between 1st January and 31st December 2017 and were chosen by a blue-ribbon panel of judges.
This year’s nominees in 31 categories, who included a number of British creators and titles, reflect a wide range of material being published in the United States today in comics and graphic novel form, representing over 120 print and online titles from more than 50 publishers and produced by creators from all over the world.
Congratulations to Scottish cartoonist Tom Gauld for his award for Baking with Kafka, published by Drawn & Quarterly. He’ll he at the Edinburgh Book Festival next month talking comics, on stage with Hamish Steele – details here. Hie appearance the Festival is part of their “Stripped” events, which include creator talks, the Edinburgh Comic Art Fair and numerous comics workshops.
All professionals in the comic book industry were eligible to vote, and the results were announced at a gala awards ceremony on the evening of Friday 20th July at San Diego Comic-Con.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
