Kim Fuller’s “Comics Rebubbled” delivers all-new strip stories, plucked from the public domain

Comedy writer Kim Fuller, whose TV and film credits include The Lenny Henry Show, Red Dwarf and more, has created his first comic, Comics Rebubbled, a bonkers reworking of some public domain comics, introducing us to new superheroes like Scott Gigawatt and Captain Covid, and Laverne, the good blonde gone bad…

“With fellow writer Paul Alexander I have taken public domain comics from the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s, removed all the text and inserted alternative dialogue to created new stories,” Kim explains.

“The result an 88 page parody comic which is hopefully funny and different.”

You can buy a copy of this nutty 80-page plus paperback title over on Comedy Plaza, Kim’s essential comedy hub for writers, performers and up-and-coming talent.

Be warned, this isn’t a comic for those of a sensitive disposition – with swearing and adult situations aplenty, you definitely don’t want to share this with your young ones. (Or, perhaps you do. We’re not the morality police, here).

“As far as I know there is nothing like this out there in the comic world,” Kim says. “The idea came to me during the course of producing several TV shows which involve re-dubbing old footage.

“Re-purposing comics in a similar way seemed a natural evolution of that technique into print.”

There are others doing similar reworks. Along with the decades running strip “Last Kiss” by John Lustig, the late American creator Keith Giffen did a number of one shots for Boom!, which rewrote several genre comics, as did the recent Mystery Science Theater mini-series from Dark Horse. Marvel also published Marvel Romance Redux: Another Kind Of Love back in the 2000s featuring strips such as “Patsy Loves Satan” , the work of Jeff Parker, John Lustig, Keith Giffen, Jimmy Palmiotti, Roger Langridge, Kyle Baker and others, adapting strips drawn by artists such as John Buscema, Don Heck, John Romita, Jack Kirby, Gene Colan and more.

The reworked strips in Comics Rebubbled include art by creators such as Jim Aparo, Bill Everett, Joe Sinnott and Al Williamson.

“The artwork in these old comics is fantastic, as you know, given that it was done by genius artists, who I’ve credited where possible, and there’s something interesting and comedic that happens when you put modern dialogue and ideas into the mouths of comic characters who clearly are from another century.”
