You’ve been to Lawless quite a few times now – what draws you back each year?

I like the venue and the convention is really well run. However, it’s the people that draw me back. So many nice people, so many friends old and new.

There’s a strong 2000AD influence at Lawless – were you a 2000AD reader as child? Or did you come to it later in life?

I was a child when I bought 2000AD Prog 1 in 1977. I was a Dan Dare fan and was drawn in by the advert on telly. But after I read the stories inside… I was hooked.

If you have one…who’s your favourite 2000AD character (and why)?

Judge Dredd is my favourite because he never gives up and he never gives in.

Shaman Kane #14 by David Broughton

As someone who seems to be the hardest working man in small press comic what new things can folks expect to find at your table this year?

I will have the new Shaman Kane #14 book with me. I’m thinking about bringing some of my original page artwork that I did for 2000AD fanzines ZARJAZ and Dogbreath to sell. As well as some 2000AD and Judge Dredd artwork I’ve
drawn, and I might bring some Shaman Kane page art to sell.

Also, anyone who spends £20+ on my artwork will get a Shaman Kane book with their purchase. Also please note: I don’t have a card reader.

Recently you’ve linked up with US publisher Antarctic Press for them to publish your Shaman Kane work. How did that link come about and what sort of feedback have you had from US readers?

Antarctic Press Editor and ETCB 2000AD Podcaster Steven Ross mentioned that the incredible creator/publisher that is Ben Dunn was looking for creators with work to publish. He liked Shaman Kane, so the rest is history as they say.

Most U.S. readers that have contacted me or left a comment have been positive. Some have asked me for work, which unfortunately I can’t offer. There are also those that enjoy speculating on the story line.

Are there guests who you’re particularly looking forward to seeing at Lawless and, if so, why?

There are so many great 2000AD creators at Lawless that I should make time to meet. However, I’m there to meet those comic book fans who decide to come and meet independent comic book creators like myself, working all day at our studios away from the limelight. Those are the comic book fans who really enjoy the medium because they dare to take a chance on reading books that dance at the edges of the UK comic book industry. Books which are starved of attention. And sometimes…they discover that occasionally the edges are at the centre.

What projects are you currently working on? Anything that folks might get a sneak peak of at Lawless?

I’m currently pencilling Shaman Kane book #15 and working on a project for Antarctic Press which I can’t talk about at the moment.
