Three of the major exhibitions at this year’s Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d’Angoulême in France are accompanied by a substantial, deluxe, limited-edition hardcover catalogues, including the Wallace “Wally” Wood exhibition.
Published in French, they’re now available to pre-order online will go on sale during the Festival from 30th January to 2nd February.
Catalogue Yoshiharu Tsuge: être sans exister pays homage to Yoshiharu Tsuge, the father of drawn autobiography – the “watakushi manga” – who also knew how to introduce dreamlike imagery into this manga form.
This catalogue features nearly 200 original plates by the Japanese creator, brought together for the first time, accompanied by enlightening texts on his work, his aesthetics and his life, written by the curators of the exhibition.
Catalogue Calvo: un maître de la fable focuses on Calvo, legendary of author of La Bête est morte! (The Beast is dead!), who has been transforming the face of comics with his albums of animal heroes since the 1940s.
Influenced by World War One, Calvo will often stage situations of great violence, hidden under the softness and dynamism of his line and the cheerful attitudes of animals.
This catalogue presents more than 150 plates and unpublished documents, linked to research never carried out until today.

Catalogue Les mondes de Wallace Wood features more than 150 pieces from a pioneer of American comics, retracing the career and the multifaceted work of a virtuoso author.
Wood never ceased to evolve and reinvent himself and is noted his SF, fantasy and humor and erotic comics.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
