New Light and Darkness War collection by Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy

Light and Darkness War - Titan Cover

Alongside Titan Comics numerous May 2015 releases for Doctor Who, Madefire tie-ins and several collections including Penguins of Madagascar is a new edition of the stunning creator-owned Light and Darkness War by Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy.

Originally published in the late 1980s as a six -issue mini series by Marvel’s Epic Comics. the story chronicles the adventures of a disabled Vietnam veteran who is transported to an afterlife dimension in a never-ending war.

Part of the series, which helped gain Tom and Cam work on Star Wars at Dark Horse, was re-publsihed in Marvel UK’s the short-lived Meltdown anthology which I edited back in 1991. It’s great to see the saga is to get a modern airing and from the information we have, it’s coming complete with concept design work and more. Let’s hope it means some of his other creator-owned creations – The Nazz with Bryan Talbot and My Name is Chaos, created with John Ridgway – are also in the works.

The elder brother of artist Rick, Tom’s numerous comic strip credits also include Star Wars for Dark Horse and Animal Man for DC Comics. Originally a poet. his comics work began in San Francisco, where he teamed up with artist Greg Irons (the creative team known as “GI/TV”) to create underground characters such as Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Our Mutant Brothers and Vince Shazam and included such titles as Legion of Charlies and contributions to many other underground comix, including Skull Comix and Slow Death Funnies.

Glasgow-born Cam Kennedy is acclaimed for his work for British comics such as 2000AD, on strips such as “Judge Dredd”, “The V.Cs” and “Rogue Trooper”, to name but three. He is also highly regarded for his art on US titles such as Star Wars: Dark Empire for Dark Horse, Daredevil and The Punisher for Marvel and Spectre and Lobo for DC Comics. Although he has glaucoma, this hasn’t stopped the Orkney-based artist from working on new projects.

Some of his earlier work for the British comic Scream has recently been republished in The Library of Death from Hibernia Comics.

The University of Dundee opened its  Cam Kennedy Comics Studio last year. situated within the University’s Tower Building, which aims to enhance their comics research, teaching and practice taking place at Dundee. Fitted out with all the equipment required to produce traditional and digital publications, the studio houses aspiring comics writers and artists from the University’s pioneering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

“In terms of comics, Cam Kennedy is a national treasure,” enthuses Phillip Vaughan, Comics Module Leader at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD), part of Dundee University. “He has been around the industry for more than 40 years and has worked on some of the most iconic titles in the world.”

Fans of his work might be interested in this great-looking sketch book, published back in 2012, which you can view online. IDW have also published two collections of his Judge Dredd work recently.

Ahead of the launch of the new collection, Tom Veitch has created a new Light and Darkness War official site at http://lightanddarknesswar.com. There’s not much there yet, but hopefully it’ll kick into a higher gear as the publication date of this new collection approaches.
