COMIC ART

An epsiode of “Scott Lanyard” (No. A192) by Hugh McClelland, for the Daily Sketch. Hugh McCleland was a cartoonist who headed the cartoon department of the Daily Mirror in the UK. In 1937, he introduced his wild Western comic strip Beelzebub Jones in the pages of the Daily Mirror. After taking over as cartoon chief at the Mirror in 1945, he dropped “Beelzebub Jones” and moved on to a variety of new strips, including “Dan Doofer”, “Sunshine Falls” and “Jimpy”. In 1952, he exited the Mirror for the tabloid Daily Sketch. He drew “Pip, Squeak and Wilfred” until 1956 when he left the UK and emigrated with his family to Canada. He launched his final strip, “Jimmy Gimmicks”, in 1957, but it last only two months.

This untested S.E.L. Television Viewer in its original box was released in either the 1950s or 1960s and comes with a “Dan Dare” strip from Eagle. The box features other comic characters such as Billy Bunter, Tiger Tim and, perhaps, and a cowboy (possibly from Eagle’s “Riders of the Range”), amongst others. The box with it contains three Dan Dare film strips. It’s possible the one in the viewer is also a Dan Dare one from this box.

An “Eagle Eye Mini-Cine Viewer” with Slide, in Original Box with Leaflet. Licensed from Eagle, made by Martin Lucas in the 1950s. The item comes with a leaflet which showcases all available titles, including some by permission of Eagle (“Dan Dare”, “PC 49”, “Riders of the Range”) and some with permission of Girl.
