A special retrospective of a classic Disney-told tale starring Danger Man and The Prisoner star Patrick McGoohan is to get a retrospective in Hollywood in October.
The Scarecrow’s story was filmed on location in the Romney Marsh area and at Pinewood Studios, England in 1963. It starred Patrick McGoohan as a humble vicar by day and a terrifying masked rider by night, leading his band of ghoulish rebels against the King’s oppression in 18th century England.
The film was distributed to British cinemas under the title Dr. Syn, Alias the Scarecrow, then screened n the United States as part of Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color TV series in three parts in 1964, as The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh
The British production was later recut and released theatrically again in 1975, where it haunted further generations for decades until its Disney Treasures DVD release in 2008 – when it sold its entire run of 39,500 copies in the United States in three weeks.
The film was adapted by Gold Key into comics (and Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill dropped him into an eighteenth century line up for The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen).
Join Disney author and historian Jim Fanning at Hollywood’s Creature Features for a Halloween treat as he takes an in-depth look at the making of this exciting adventure with rare behind-the-scenes photos, film clips, a display of original memorabilia, and much more.
