Retro Review: Skrull Kill Krew Omnibus

Review by Lucy Braithwaite

Funny, shocking and irreverent, it’s easy to see why this caused a stir in back in 1995. The Skrull Kill Krew are an unconventional Marvel team, to say the least, but when it comes to eliminating the Skrulls, they get the job done.

Those green shape-shifting aliens have long been the bane of the traditional Marvel team ups since they were introduced by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee in Fantastic Four #2 in 1962. But here we focus on the Skrull Kill Krew and this Omnibus has the full story.

Ryder, Moonstomp, Riot, Catwalk and Dice are about as different from one another as you can get. But they were all unfortunate enough to have ingested Skrull burger meat and mutated into killers. They can shapeshift into monstrous forms and spot a Skrull masquerading as a human a mile off. Like the blurb says “Don’t expect S.H.E.I.L.D or any super heroes to save you, because they can’t even spot them”! When the team roll in to fight the Skrulls, they make the Marvel superheroes look like they’re tinkering around the edges.

Skrull Kill Krew has lots of inventive action, but does not shy away from themes of fascism and racism. It’s hard to miss the relevance, reading the book today. Equally, the question of who holds the power in the world: the Krew are far from perfect they are also among the victims.

Included in the omnibus are both minseries of Skrull Kill Krew. Their creation in 1995 (by Grant Morrison, Mark Millar, Brendan McCarthy and Steve Yeowell), and then their return in 2009 (with Adam Felber and Mark Robinson). Well-worth a second look.
