Roy of the Rovers artist David Sque visits Lancaster for rare UK appearance this weekend

This weekend David Sque, former Roy of the Rovers artist and illustrator of Rise of the Invincibles graphic novel, arrives in Lancaster from his home in Spain for two events.

On Saturday 10th June, he’ll be at Waterstones, King Street, Lancaster, signing from 1.00pm.

Both he and Invincibles author and publisher Michael Barett will be signing copies of the book – the tale of the early days of Preston North End – and answering any questions you may have.

Then on Sunday (11th June), he’ll be at Lancaster Comics Day in Lancaster Library, which starts at 11.00am and runs until 5.00pm.

Invincible Books will have a stall selling at the event than they’ll be signing both their book and art prints. Both Michael and David will also be on a panel talking and answering questions about British football comics alongside Tiger, Roy of the Rovers and Eagle editor Barrie Tomlinson and artist Richard Piers Rayner.

Preston North End – The Rise Of The Invincibles - Cover

This is the third Lancaster Comics Day, offering a full list of comic-inspired events at the Lancaster Library, in part honouring comic football hero Roy of the Rovers, who has delighted generations of fans since his first appearance way back in 1954!

Organised by the Friends of Lancaster Library, guests include Tiger and Roy of the Rovers editor Barrie Tomlinson, who persuaded Morecambe and Wise and Prince Phillip to write for the comic; artist David Sque; Doctor Who artist Richard Piers Rayner; comic artist and publisher Tim Perkins (Doctor Who, Transformers and Worlds End); publisher Michael Barrett; Nick Brokenshire (acclaimed artist on the US comic Amelia Cole and Once and Future Queen); author AS Chambers (creator of the Lancaster-based series Sam Spallucci); comics writer and publisher Tom Ward (Merrick -The Sensational Elephantman) and comics writer and editor John Freeman (Doctor Who, The Real Ghostbusters, currently editor of Lost Fleet – Corsair).

Panels include a look back at football comics and New Eagle; a celebration of the the life and work of Jack Kirby (co-creator of the Fantastic Four and much more); self publishing dos and don’ts; and a look at Doctor Who comics past and present!

Plus! Plenty of comics for sale, events for kids with comic artists Marc Jackson and Jack Knight, a sneak peek at the Lakes International Comic Art Festival in October, comic cake, independent comic creators show off their work, face painting and more!
