SEQUENTIAL, the iPad app for digital graphic novels, has partnered with London’ House of Illustration to provide a free digital guide for their new exhibition Comix Creatrix: 100 Women Making Comics, as well as digital graphic novels displayed within the exhibition itself.
As we’ve previously reported, Comix Creatrix: 100 Women Making Comics, which opened on Friday, is the UK’s largest ever exhibition of work by pioneering female artists working in the comics medium. It presents original artwork from 100 innovative creators – much of it never been seen in public before – and debunks the myth that women have a limited stake in the world of comics. The exhibition recognises the extraordinary variety of comics by women; from observational comedy to surreal fantasy, challenging biography to subversive protest.
The digital guide will be available for free, exclusively on SEQUENTIAL, for the duration of the Comix Creatrix exhibition. It features over 150 pages of artwork and information from the exhibition, including work by Audrey Niffenegger, Posy Simmonds, Emma Vieceli, Hannah Berry, Isabel Greenberg, Suzy Varty and many more.
SEQUENTIAL have also created a bespoke version of their acclaimed comics software, which will run on iPads in the exhibition and features 15 full-length graphic novels for visitors to browse through – all by women whose work features in Comix Creatrix.
“Angoulême may have a hard time finding great female comics artists but the UK’s House of Illustration has no such problem,’ commented Russell Willis, the founder of SEQUENTIAL, said, Comix Creatrix is a fantastic celebration of a range of amazing artists, proving that women have always been at the forefront of comic art. We hope visitors to the exhibition will enjoy browsing the full-length graphic novels, and that anyone who is unable to visit the exhibition in person – or those who visit and want a take-away from it – will download the digital guide to get an look at the range and breadth of the artwork on display.”
SEQUENTIAL features hundreds of graphic novels and comics from leading creators and publishers, made available via their acclaimed storefront app and reader for the iPad. SEQUENTIAL’s mission is to expand the market for graphic novels for adults with a beautifully presented, carefully curated selection of material that focuses on the richness of the medium outside of the typical superhero offering.
They have previously partnered with organisations including the Bri@sh Library and the London Book Fair to make digital graphic novels a feature of exhibitions and installations.
House of Illustration is the UK’s only public gallery and education space dedicated solely to illustration, with a creative programme of exhibitions, talks and events. Founded by Sir Quentin Blake, it opened in July 2014 at the heart of London’s King’s Cross regeneration area. It is the place to see, learn about and enjoy illustration in all its forms; from picture books to political cartoons, advertisements to animation and scientific drawings to fashion design. A registered charity, House of Illustration identifies and promotes new illustration talent, commissions new work and has a London-wide education and outreach programme.
