Soaring Penguin’s “Meanwhile…” anthology set for return

John Anderson of Soaring Penguin Press has announced the revival of their Meanwhile… anthology in 2027, as a quarterly title.

In advance of the relaunch, he’s publishing a Meanwhile… The Best, collection of stories from the first 12 volumes of a title that, he jests (hop!) “will probably be the death of me.”

“Next year might be a bit crazy,” says John. “You may recall that I published Meanwhile…, a comic anthology for several years. I put a pause on it in 2023 for various reasons. Next year, I plan to continue. But this time, I want to go quarterly.

“I think anthologies are important,” he continues. “They provide a place for stories that aren’t strong enough or long enough to be published as their own title, but that deserve to be read, to find their audience.

“For anthologies to work, however, they need to generate enough revenue to be self-sustaining. (So expect to hear more from me.)

“Initially, I want to lean into Meanwhile… The Best. To show the potential that an anthology might have. And to generate an interest in my anthology title.”

To that end, Soaring Penguin are offering an Advanced Reader Preview, which offers a huge mix of strips to savour, introduced by comic creator David Hine.
