Oxford’s The Story Museum and The Phoenix comic have joined forces for the Phoenix Comic Festival running Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th May 2022.
Tickets will go on sale to Phoenix subscribers today, Saturday 26th March, and on general release from 6th April. Full details are here on the Story Museum web site.
The event is a double celebration: the launch of KA-BOOM! The Story Museum’s brand new exhibition exploring the art of creating comics and The Phoenix comic’s tenth birthday.
The Phoenix Comic Fest is planned to be a weekend of epic comic fun: learn new skills in masterclasses and interactive workshops with some of your favourite Phoenix artists, including Abby Bulmer, Neill Cameron, Robert Deas, Tor Freeman, Adam Murphy, Gary Northfield, Zak Simmonds-Hurn and Jamie Smart; get your books signed, pick up some festival goodies and then step inside the pages of a giant life-size comic strip in The Story Museum’s amazing new exhibition KA-BOOM! – and discover what it takes it make a great comic.
The ticket purchase includes three interactive events with Phoenix artists; a market-place to meet Phoenix artists, try out new skills and buy comic materials; book signings and meet and greets with your favourite Phoenix artists; and access to The Story Museum’s brand new exhibition KA-BOOM! The art of creating comics, and the Museum’s magical Enchanted Library.
Ticket holders will also receive an exclusive gift, only available to festival attendees, and an optional packed lunch.

The weekend-long event includes a free live-stream draw-along, with comics superstar Jamie Smart, on Sunday 29th May.
The very special draw-along event with Jamie Smart will be streamed live from The Phoenix Comic Festival in Oxford. Tickets for the draw-along are free but must be booked in advance of the event. All bookers will be emailed a streaming link ahead of the event.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.
He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
