The Prosthetics Event proves a sell out success, again

While many downthetubes readers’ attention will be on Thought Bubble Festival in Harrogate this weekend, we should also highlight another significant happening for fans of SF and fantasy television and film: the sold out annual The Prosthetics Event, taking place in Coventry.

Taking place tomorrow, Saturday 16th November 2024, in Coventry, on offer is an “epic day of learning, shopping and networking”.

The now sold-out event includes features demonstrations, talks and advice from top film industry professionals, beautiful body art, extraordinary exhibits and shopping with leading specialist retailers.

If you weren’t aware of it before, you may want to bookmark their official website for next year.

Founded and organised by make up artist Thiago Nishimoto, alongside a wide and diverse range of exhibitors, including FX companies and universities, educators at this year’s event include the multi award winning VE Neill (who’s worked on Batman, Beetlejuice, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Amazing Spider-man and The Hunger Games, and more); Stuart Bray (Game of Thrones, Doctor Who); Millennium FX founder Neill Gorton (Judge Dredd, From Hell), who also launched Prosthetics Magazine, today published by TILT; Howard Berger (The Walking Dead); make-up effects artist, concept artist and art director Bradley Greenwood (Lord of the Rings); make-up artist Rebecca Lee (Altered Carbon, Shogun); Emmy Award Winning Hair Department Head Sanna Seppanen (Warcraft: The Beginning, Alien: Earth); makeup designer Kate Benton (Clash of the Titans, Love, Actually, Horrible Histories: The Romans); Coulier Creatures FX Creative Director Mark Coulier (Star Wars: Episode One, The Mummy, Fantastic Beasts); writer, producer, director, actor, animator, visual effects artist, and educator Todd Debreceni, probably best known for his book Special Makeup Effects for Stage and Screen, re-released last year, considered by many to be the ‘bible’ of the makeup effects industry; and several others.

If you are lucky enough to be attending, look out, too, for author Joe Nazzaro, who will have copies of his amazing new book, Star Trek: The Art of Glenn Hetrick’s Alchemy Studios with him – a remarkable guide to Glenn Hetrick’s prosthetics department, which was behind the magic of all five seasons of Star Trek: Discovery.

Joe, who I first commissioned to write for me on Doctor Who Magazine many years ago, has written for countless magazines over the past three decades, including Star Trek Magazine/ Explorer, Starlog, Fangoria, SFX, Makeup Artist Magazine and Prosthetics Magazine, to which he’s contributed since the very beginning.

In a Facebook post, Thiago Nishimoto praised the incredible exhibitors, artists, and educators “who are joining us and generously sharing their time, expertise, and talent.

“It takes so much dedication and planning to make these events happen, and I am in awe of the passion each one of you brings,” he continued. “Whether you’re showcasing your work, teaching, or offering special deals, your involvement is truly what makes this event come alive.

“As small, independent businesses, artists, and educators, we face an industry that’s changing faster than ever. But in times of uncertainty, we have the power to uplift each other. Your support makes a difference. Every ticket purchased, every artwork admired, every lesson shared, every product bought – it all adds to the strength of our community.

This event is about more than just a gathering – it’s a reminder of how much we need each other to thrive. By coming together, we help ensure that creativity, education, and small businesses continue to flourish, no matter the challenges.”
