Comics: Explore and Create Comic Art open at Telford’s Coalbrookdale Gallery

Comics: Explore and Create Comic Art Exhibition LogoThe touring British comics exhibition, Comics: Explore and Create Comic Artfrom Seven Stories, The National Centre for Children’s Books, is currently being hosted at the Coalbrookdale Gallery, adjacent to Enginuity, part of Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron, until 1st September 2019.

Offering an eclectic mix of original, iconic comic art alongside work by current children’s comic creators, the colourful and interactive exhibition – which launched at Seven Stories back in 2017 and has since been touring the UK –  will delight the whole family.

Comic book fans of all ages will be immersed in the stimulating and imaginative world of children’s comics, surrounded by interactive activities, playful props and unique, original materials.

Thanks to collector Peter Hansen, included in the exhibition is artwork featuring The Dandy‘s Desperate Dan and Beano‘s Dennis the Menace as they were in the 1950s, along with Oor Wullie, Minnie the Minx, Roy of the Rovers and Dan Dare from the Eagle.

The free-entry exhibition also features Captain America, Wonder Woman, Superman and Hulk as drawn by British artist Ian Churchill, who has worked for both Marvel and DC Comics.

Other British comics creators such as Kate Brown, Jamie Smart and Laura Ellen Anderson have prepared storyboards, sketches and 3D models to lend to the exhibition as well as giving Seven Stories’ visitors unique insight into their creative processes.

The exhibition was developed by Seven Stories, The National Centre for Children’s Books and following its run in Telford will head to The Dick Institute in Kilmarnock, running September until December 2019, and has also been booked by Dorset County Museum between July – September 2020.

The founder of downthetubes, John works as a comics editor, writer, as Creative Consultant on the Dan Dare audio adventures for B7 Media, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. Working in British comics publishing for over 30 years, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Star Trek Magazine and Babylon 5 Magazine. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War and “Dan Dare”.
