Billy the Brave by Adam Bagley
This comic was made for a brave little boy named Billy Thompson who, sadly, passed away from a brain tumour. The project helps Billy’s mum and friends continue to raise awareness of the issues with DIPG cancer.
Ellie Thompson is on X, Facebook and Instagram, where she provides regular news updates and shares personal experiences relating to DIPG.

Cornmother by Alexandra Leda Green – Blue Fox Comics
Based on pre-Christian superstitions, a corn mother is a figure woven from the last sheath of corn at the end of the harvest. It is then ploughed back into the first furrow of the next season. The doll essentially gives the spirit of the corn somewhere to reside between planting cycles.
After young Ruth discovers the doll in her barn, it begins speaking to her, but this is no wistful sprite, but a malevolent being that is either looking for revenge or just wants to be planted back in the soil…

Run by volunteers, ComicScene had a busy year in 2024. Run by Tony Foster, the publisher has released three books over the last twelve months – ComicScene, Raising Amy and Tara Togs, all distributed by WHSmith and Amazon). Coming this year is Pat Mills’ successor to “Charley’s War”, Ragtime Soldier, and Peter Pan by Stref, based on JM Barrie’s original work.
They also refreshed their Comic Creator Directory and launched theme weeks on the ComicScene website, and a podcast, too. Their Substack now has over 5000 subscribers and the website has over 30,000 visitors a year. We run the ComicScene Awards on an annual basis with 3000 of you voting this year.

John is the founder of downthetubes, launched in 1998. He is a comics and magazine editor, writer, and Press Officer for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He also runs Crucible Comic Press.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine and Overkill for Marvel UK, Babylon 5 Magazine, Star Trek Magazine, and its successor, Star Trek Explorer, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics; and has edited several comic collections and graphic novels, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”, and Hancock: The Lad Himself, by Stephen Walsh and Keith Page.
He’s the writer of comics such as Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs”, with Dave Hailwood.
