It can’t have escaped the attention of eagle-eyed downthetubes readers that Axel Scheffler, the illustrator of iconic children’s books including The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom and The Snail and the Whale has created an original illustration for TV Times’ Christmas Double Issue cover – but don’t miss out on a competition to win a fab-Yule-ous The Snail and the Whale goodie bag.
Depicting Father Christmas alongside characters from The Snail and the Whale – an animated version of which will air on BBC1 on Christmas Day – the cover is also signed by Axel.
The TV Times team worked closely with Axel to create the artwork which he says he hopes “will make people feel Christmassy. And inspire people to watch The Snail and the Whale. It’s a perfect film!”
Axel Scheffler is an award-winning, internationally-acclaimed illustrator of some of the most well-loved children’s books, which have been published in many languages and his work has been exhibited all around the world.
The first book he illustrated was back in 1988 – The Piemakers by Helen Cresswell – beginning his partnership with author Julia Donaldson in 1992 with A Squash and a Squeeze. Since then, he’s also created illustrations for The Gruffalo, Zog, The Highway Rat, Room on the Broom, The Ugly Five and more– and a set of Christmas stamps for the Royal Mail in 2012 that included Santa.
“There is no illustrator quite like Axel Scheffler,” says Colin Tough, TV Times editor-in-chief, adds, “and we were honoured to work with him on creating an original piece of artwork for our Christmas issue. The result is this delightful cover – and a lot of excitement in the office!”
