Jamie Smart’s “Fish Head Steve” heading to your TV screens?

ITV Studios America has entered into an exclusive production deal with Komixx Entertainment Inc., an entertainment rights owner and content production company based in the UK that represent a number of properties, including Jamie Smart‘s “Fish Head Steve” character, who first appeared in The DFC.

Under the deal, all Komixx’s US television development will funnel through ITV Studios America, which continues to expand its scripted slate.

First published in The DFC (a weekly British children’s anthology comic, published by David Fickling Books, an imprint of Random House), Knoxx ae now developing “Fish Head Steve” for TV animation (you can view a sample here on their web site). It’s described by Komixx Entertainment as “the quirky story of a group of friends who all wake up with bizarre new heads, and as they endeavour to find out exactly what is the cause of their freakish new features they are determined to have some fun along the way”. The original comic is absolutely hilarious and has, of course, been released as a collection.

Other Komixx-handled properties include Toby’s Travelling Circus, which already screens on Channel 5, Wanda and the Alien from best-selling and award-winning author Sue Hendra, also produced for Channel 5, Princess Poppy, Charlie Small, the story of a young amateur explore which sold huge numbs of a special World Book Day adventure and a children’s SF story, Monster Republic.

Based in London, Komixx describes itself as “a new generation, entertainment rights and production company operating at the forefront of digital content technologies.”

As an independent producer and rights owner, with global distribution alliances, Komixx is taking full advantage of digital entertainment technology, creating entertainment for the widest range of media platforms, including online, on-demand, mobile, home television and cinema.

The company also looks to exploit the maximum potential of its content through the wider development of ancillary licensing for toys, publishing, games, and associated merchandising.

The founder of downthetubes, which he established in 1998. John works as a comics and magazine editor, writer, and on promotional work for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He is currently editor of Star Trek Explorer, published by Titan – his third tour of duty on the title originally titled Star Trek Magazine.

Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics. He has also edited several comic collections, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”.

He’s the writer of “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies” for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs” with Dave Hailwood.
