Just over a year ago artist Graeme Neil Reid, whose artwork has appeared in 2000AD, Judge Dredd Megazine, Radio Times, and The Dangerous Book Of Heroes, began to paint A6 watercolours of characters from Doctor Who. His intention was to paint one a week for several months as a break from his more routine work, as a way to show off his skills to potential clients, and as images to put on his various social media feeds. These proved so popular on Graeme’s media feeds that he continued on with them beyond the initial set that he had intended to paint, and even began to experiment with video recording them to show their (speeded up) creation.
In total Graeme painted 52 of these A6 watercolours, which included all 13 Doctors and many companions and monsters from the series both old and new. Fulfilling one of his original intentions, he has created a portfolio book entitled 52: One Year In Time And Space to send out to editors and potential clients as an introduction to his style of painted artwork.
While many of the original 52 paintings have already been sold, with his table at Thought Bubble 2015 in mind, Graeme has created a set of smaller painted sketches of Doctor Who creatures, monsters and other related items to sell there. Each person who buys one of these painted sketches will get it framed in a special presentation copy of the 52: One Year In Time And Space book.
In addition to these painted sketches, Graeme has created an A2 colour poster with each of his 13 Doctors paintings on it. He will have 25 copies of this poster to give away free to the first 25 Doctor Who cosplayers to come to his table at Thought Bubble, number 15 in the New Dock Hall beside the Forbidden Planet International stall, and allow him to get his picture taken with them.
For cosplayers and non-cosplayers alike there this also the potential to win the last of the 52 paintings that Graeme painted. He has framed the original of his Tardis in the time vortex and each person who buys something from Graeme over the Thought Bubble weekend, and who wishes to participate by leaving him their contact details, will be entered into a draw to win this 18cm by 13cm painting. The draw will take place at 3pm on the Sunday and Graeme will post the framed artwork to the winner if they are no longer at Thought Bubble or cannot be contacted on the day.
