He’s no stranger to the pages of The Beano – having taken on Minnie the Minx in the weekly humour comic from DC Thomson in the past, for its 75th anniversary edition for example. But now Britain’s top male tennis star and current Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has been promoted to guest editor.
Tennis champion Andy Murray will both star in and guest-edit this week’s issue of The Beano as the comic succumbs to tennis fever and Dennis the Menace (drawn by Nigel Parkinson) helps Andy Murray discover his inner Menace — with disastrous consequences.
“Olympic Gold was my proudest moment; becoming the first male British Wimbledon winner for 77 years was amazing,” notes Murray in his Editor’s letter,”but this might be my greatest title yet… Andy Murray – Editor of The Beano!”
The Beano’s (regular) Editor Craig Graham said, “It’s amazing to think that Andy is the only British man to have won Wimbledon in the entire 76-year history of The Beano. Andy was a great sport throughout his week in charge, and he’s welcome in The Beano office any time… although after his experience with Dennis I’m not sure he’ll want to!”
Andy Murray added, “It’s not every day you get to guest-edit The Beano, but I used to love reading it when I was younger – it’s amazing to think it’s been running for 76 years! I’m around anytime Dennis needs me to work on his tennis skills.”
Also in the tennis-crazed issue, Dennis’s dog Gnasher makes a meal of Murray’s tennis racquet and Minnie the Minx is on court (not in court, as her father fears). The issue also features a special “Unleash Your Inner Menace!” Andy Murray supporter’s poster.
• The Andy Murray guest-edited issue of The Beano goes on sale Wednesday 25th June 2014 and will be on sale in all good newsagents and as a digital edition. More info: www.beano.com
