Longtime YouTuber Josh Snares has released a five minute preview of his animated not-for-profit adaptation of the Doctor Who audio adventure, Phantoms of the Deep, a Fourth Doctor story written by Jonathan Morris.
The production, work still in progress, is a not for profit fan adaptation of the story, and follows previous well received animated adaptations by Josh, such as the Sixth Doctor regeneration story, The Brink of Death, and the Seventh Doctor story, The Genocide Machine.
Released in 2013 by Big Finish, the audio adventure Phantoms of the Deep, available as an official digital download, introduced the crew of the deep sea vehicle Erebus, including John Albasiny as Chris Fleming and Alice Krige as Dr Patricia Sawyer. They make an unusual and startling discovery on their mission to explore the Mariana Trench at the very bottom of the ocean, the deepest and most inhospitable place on Earth… a battered blue police box.
As the Doctor (Tom Baker), Romana (Mary Tamm) and K9 (John Leeson) join them on their journey, the submariners soon discover that the TARDIS is not the only unusual find lurking on the sea floor.
Super-intelligent squid, long-lost submarines and their miraculous occupants are only the start of their troubles. The Goblins are coming. And they won’t let anyone out alive…
Josh Snares, a videographer based in Adelaide, South Australia, who regularly discusses the history of Doctor Who, from missing episodes, to wild oddities on YouTube, has finished adapting the first episode of the story, but hasn’t started the second, and is loathe to commit to a completion date. “I don’t like to set dates,” Josh says, “because it’s either in a month or six months.”
Josh has previously explained how Doctor Who has “infected every aspect of my life, from inspiring me to go into film-making, and even making a YouTube channel dedicated to it.
“I am so blessed, and thankful, that people have enjoyed my work. I’m so proud to be a part of such a loving and talented community that is the Doctor Who fandom.”
Reaction to the tease for this fan Phantoms of the Deep project has been positive so far, and we’re looking forward to seeing how the adaptation turns out in due course.
