Yor, the Hunter from the Future, to get English release at last

Yor the Hunter, originally published in Argentina in the 1970s as Henga el cazador, is to get an English language collection, thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign by Antarctic Press.

Yor (Henga)

Created in 1974 by writer Ray Collins (pseudonym of writer Eugenio Juan Zappietro) and the late artist Juan Zanotto, Yor the Hunter first appeared for the first time in the Argentine comics magazine Skorpio, a saga set at the beginning of the Neolithic Age, a heady mix of prehistoric tribes and animals, including dinosaurs and other monsters.

Yor, a mysterious warrior wearing a curious medallion constructed of an unknown material, embarks on a journey to discover the truth of his identity with the dwarf Pag and the beautiful Ka-Laa as companions.

Revealing the last survivors of a very advanced civilisation which is now on the verge of extinction, the original comic, republished in in the Italian magazine Lanciostory, starting with its first issue (#0) in 1975, inspired the eponymous cult film, released back in 1983.

Now, Antarctic Press plan to make Yor the Hunter available in English for the first time, fully restored and remastered, with the beautiful black and white artwork looking sharper than it has in decades.

The Kickstarter campaign ends this Sunday (23rd November 2025).

“If you grew up loving Savage Sword of Conan or the classic Warren magazines, this will feel right at home,” say the US publisher.

On offer is the complete story as published as an Italian graphic novel, far deeper and more philosophical than the film version, containing a lot of material that never made it into the film, or the TV miniseries.

“If you love Euro fantasy, retro sci fi, pulp adventure, or just discovering long lost comics history, this is a great time to check it out or help spread the word,” Antarctic ask.

The film, Yor, the Hunter from the Future was released in 1983 (launching in Italy on 10th February 1983, a US release following on 19th August), directed by Antonio Margheriti (19th September 1930 – 4th November 2002) and starring Reb Brown (who also played Captain America in two made-for-TV films in 1979), Corinne Cléry (who played Bond girl Corinne Dufour, in Moonraker), Luciano Pigozzi (10th January 1927 – 14th June 2008, also known professionally as Alan Collins ), and John Steiner (7th January 1941 – 31st July 2022), an English actor who found himself in demand in Italy and moved there, appearing in a great number of Italian exploitation and B-films, including police action adventures, and westerns.

Described variously as “endearingly ridiculous” and “excellent use of a shoestring budget“, it was a co-production between Italy, France, and Turkey.

The film was part of the wave of science fiction/sword-and-sorcery themed films that appeared after the success of John Milius’s 1982 film version of Conan the Barbarian. Along with co-writing and directing the film, Margheriti supervised the films special effects with his son, Edoardo.

Although the film was one of Margheriti’s most financially successful films,  grossing $2,810,199 at the US box office, it received poor reviews from Variety and The New York Times and drew three nominations at the 1983 Golden Raspberry Awards.
