John R. Mullaney “Aliens” art included in this weekend’s Propstore auction

This weekend sees Propstore’s latest auction continue in London, previously featured on downthetubes – and there’s still time to lay your hands on original Star Wars art by artist John R. Mullaney.

Several of John’s original artworks – some featured in the Building Bigger Worlds exhibition we covered earlier this year – are in the auction, which began yesterday, Friday 5th December.

Artwork inspired by Alien and Star Wars has already sold, but more originals go under the hammer this weekend. Check out the remaining artworks for sale here.

John’s still to be sold hand-painted illustration of the Clone Swamp Speeder (IPS – Infantry Support Platform) was commissioned by Lucasfilm/Disney and Dorling Kindersley for Star Wars: Complete Vehicles – Incredible Cross-Sections. Working from a Lucasfilm-supplied 3D model, Mullaney rendered the vehicle traditionally in pencil, watercolour, ink and gouache on 300gsm paper, adding the two clone troopers as part of the brief. Approved by Doug Chiang and the Lucasfilm/DK licensing team, the artwork has appeared in multiple editions of DK’s bestselling cross-sections series. Due to studio licensing protocols, the original artwork cannot be reproduced, making this piece uniquely rare.

John R Mullaney is an award-winning filmmaker and internationally published artist specialising in technical and cutaway illustration for major sci-fi properties. He has produced studio-approved artwork for Star Wars, Alien, Firefly/Serenity, Halo, Warhammer, Batman, Doctor Who and Wall-E. His work has been licensed by Lucasfilm, 20th Century Studios and Universal, in partnership with publishers including Dorling Kindersley, Insight Editions and Free League.

Embracing the ‘in-camera’ craft of the filmmakers he admires, Mullaney creates his artworks with paint before pixels, working traditionally on 300gsm watercolour paper using pencil and ink, then building multiple layers of watercolour and gouache to achieve the fine detail, depth and texture that define his work.

He held his first major exhibition of original artworks in central London earlier this year – Building Bigger Worlds, showcasing more than 25 years of film-licensed illustration. Notable collectors of Mullaney’s work include Alien: Romulus director Fede Alvarez.

Now, his original studio-licensed artworks for Alien and Star Wars have been selected by Propstore for a dedicated multi-lot feature in their Los Angeles and London Entertainment Memorabilia auctions

As a filmmaker, Mullaney’s short film The Joy and the Wonder, made with his band Last Picture Show, won Best Music Video at the Hollywood Art and Movie Awards. He is currently developing his first short narrative film and his debut feature screenplay.
